2020 - SEPTEMBER - Prepping Updates For The Week/Month
Got a new computer and have been setting up and transferring stuff all week, so this thread is a little late. Sorry about that.
I've been harvesting the plantain around my property and dehydrating it for later uses. Found some other herbal things, too, but I want to do more research before I collect or use them. I re-did my herbal cabinet, organizing and putting some into jars to make stuff easier to use.
Husband has been doing general maintenance around the property, getting ready for winter.
I moved the sickly kitten inside for now. He's doing better, but he's almost hairless, so even with the heating pad in his little house, he was shivering in the cold mornings. He's doing much better inside. Now if I can just get the dog to leave him alone! He wants to play.

I picked a wheel barrel full of tomatoes I'm going to turn them into salsa today... There is probably 2 more loads out there if they ripen..
I'm starting to look forward to the end of canning season just to be honest.

Some people have called and told me they don't want anymore stuff. We have a small garden down at camp too, and nobody wants anymore down there either.
Wish we lived closer. My green thumb has gone brown.

Just got down running the generators, topped them off with gas, cleaned the plugs, etc..
The garden is about done, between today and tomorrow, I'll start pulling the tomato, corn, bean and pepper plants. I'll leave the spices continue to grow and trim them as needed.
Shot a groundhog out of the one apple tree in the backyard, people don't believe the climb trees.
Speaking of apple trees, mine didn't do squat compared to other years. The peach tree did OK, but the peaches were hard as rocks, but the wife did her thing with them.
Some of the grandkids are coming over today so I guess I'll have to feed them and build a fire tonight and tell them some more lies, I mean stories from when I was their age.
Might even have a beer or two and dance a jig for them

Re: 2020 - SEPTEMBER - Prepping Updates For The Week/Month
There were a lot of yard sales yesterday on our trip to town for the grocery run.
We restocked what we used and bought some produce.
Yard sales:
A PYREX oval casserole dish $1
A North Face jacket and gloves $25 (retail $175 & $45)
A bunch of metal spring embroidery hoops in different sizes (I didn't even count, I just grabbed, haven't seen them in years and these look like they've never been used!) - $1.50
A double sided fleece/fake sherpa throw for the grand-niece - $4
We were surprised to see yard sales because one of the businesses that appears to have gone out of business is our free pennysaver newspaper (where yard sales are advertised). Since so many of the mom and pop stores around here are closed permanently due to the plandemic, I guess they couldn't get enough advertising to stay afloat, either.

Re: 2020 - SEPTEMBER - Prepping Updates For The Week/Month
So, the domino effect happened yesterday.
I was happily wandering around the house drinking my coffee when the dude who made my big desk called and said he was bringing it by, it was finished.
I started madly cleaning the spot it was to go, and Husband casually asked it's measurements. The area was 4 inches too short.
We set about moving furniture, but whilst moving, discovered dirt, toys, half chewed milk bones, coins, etc. So as we moved, we had to clean. We also had to take apart the couch and reverse it's L shape (it's IKEA, you can do that). 5 hours later, the living room is totally re-arranged, the furniture is cleaned, the floors are cleaned, the carpet is cleaned, and my desk is parked under the window that looks out into our driveway. The place looks amazing.
We also moved the sick kitty into the guest bedroom so he'd have more privacy from the other cats and dogs razzing him through the cage. He's getting better, it's just a slow process.

Sounds like you had too much vinegar in it.
Try one of these Dave:

Re: 2020 - SEPTEMBER - Prepping Updates For The Week/Month
Ketchup
3 lbs finely chopped tomatoes (about 7 cups)
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 tsp salt
2 TB honey
1 tsp mustard
1/2 tsp worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 twelve ounce can tomato paste to thicken (optional, I didn’t have enough tomatoes)
Instructions
Add all the ingredients, except tomato paste, to a pot.
Bring to a boil. Turn the heat to a simmer and cook until it thickens 30-60 minutes. Add the tomato paste, whisk well, and let cook for an additional 5 minutes.
Remove from the heat. Allow to cool. Using a blender or food processor, blend to desired consistency.
Store in fridge in an air-tight container for up to 14 days, or freeze for later.
Can in water bath canner for 15 minutes.

Re: 2020 - SEPTEMBER - Prepping Updates For The Week/Month
This past week has been somewhat to be desired. I was down at camp for three days and on Tuesday, me and my hunting buddy were walking in the woods to check out our tree stands to see if any needed repaired prior to archery season.
Well, halfway to one of the tree stands there was the brightest explosive light in my left eye. I rubbed my eye and opened it up and I was blind, nothing, couldn't see nothing but black.
To make a long story short, I had a detached retina and had to have surgery in Pittsburgh on Thursday, stayed overnight at a hotel, 'cause had to see the specialist on Friday. So far so good, I can see, but everything is a big blurrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!
And they call these your golden years, they need to shoot the person that came up with that saying.

Rick, hope you're better soon and your eyesight fully recovers. Take care of yourself, tree stands can wait.
You've reminded me to get an eye checkup that's overdue.
