A common question we are asked about preparing for any type of emergency is how often you should rotate your water storage. If you’ve tried to search around on the internet for an answer, there is a lot of conflicting information. We hope our article will not only answer your question but also help you feel more confident about preparing for an emergency. ---CONTINUED---

Re: Rotating Water Storage
I have 5 gallon opaque jugs that I filled with water from the tap (municipal treatment, plus whole house pre-filter and main filter) and treated with fancy preserver drops that I plan to leave alone for 10 years before rotating. Worst case (algal bloom), I can run it through my Berkey filter, but I suspect with all the treatment that it would be safe for even more than 10 years.
I also store commercially bottled water in both 0.5 liter and sport bottle sizes that I run through for car trips, giving to workers on the property, etc. Never had any case last for more than 2 years, but I suspect since I keep them in a dark cool spot in the house that they'd last past the 2 years printed as an expiration date.
Of course, my main water plan for an emergency is to use the Berkey to filter anything that might come out of the tap, or if the tap is dry, I have a river down the road that I can fill 5 gallon buckets with and filter when I get it back to the house. The bottled water and jugs are for when conditions outside make going out unsafe.

Re: Rotating Water Storage
I have stored water, in the 7 gallon teal-colored camping jugs. I just filled them with my tap water (because it's already treated), added a few drops of bleach, just for peace of mind, not because it was necessary, since it was already treated. Capped it and stored it at all along the floor of my garage (on top of old flooring panels, to keep it off the concrete).
Water has been there for several years. One of the containers eventually cracked a bit & leaked. I actually think it was my fault. I think I filled it too much. Didn't leave enough head space for winter, when the water most likely froze some, since its in an unheated garage, along the outside wall. When I emptied the water jug, the water was fine! Still clear. No smell.
I fixed the jug, using the 'Fix It' spray seal that you see on tv.
My plan is the same as dm's ... store for several years. Have extra jugs on hand to fill, if needed. I store laundry detergent & fabric softener jugs for my grey water storage. That way they'll be easy to tell apart from my drinking water jugs. I'll use my teal camping jugs & white 5 gallon buckets for consumable water.
