This is a good guide that was referenced in the post by 'happypreppers' (above), in their article. I thought it should be pulled and put in a separate post here:

I thought about building a hand cranked generator or a bicycle generator. After checking out the prices for a generator/alternator, along with the misc. parts to go along with it, I decided to buy a small hand cranked one. This is the one I bought and will give an update once I receive it and have one of the grandkids demonstrate it for me: Laugh Animated

OK, received the hand cranked generator. Of course it's made in China, but the little thing works. It works as long as your arms are in good shape, but it's better than nothing. My cellphone was at 75% charge, I cranked for about 20 minutes until it was 76% charged, so is it worth it, not for me, but I'll keep it.

Now, I think I will built one from a regular car generator, not an alternator.

Good article on generators, I have 2 of these harbor freight, 900 watt, 2 cycle generators. The article is correct on the gas mileage on these, they sip gas:

Producing 150W is do-able with pedal power, but with arm power?
I doubt very many people can produce 150 watts arm power.

(Get a rope and about 55lbs weight. Dangle the weight at the end of about 20 feet of rope. Now using arm muscles, try to lift that weight through that 20 feet, in ten seconds. That is about 150W.)

Might be good for producing a fraction of that power, but I don't really see any spec's.

The whole discussion, here, is good for learning the limitations of the human body and recognizing the need for small power sources, that can act for a very long time, in a grid down situation.

Yep TRex, but that's what grandkids are made for. Laugh Animated
