To make this rug, you will need to have some basic sewing skills and basic crochet skills under your belt.

Grandma taught 11 year old me to crochet but I can't read a pattern and only know a few stitches. Single, double, and that's about it. I suppose I should look into picking it up again.
My long crochet hook does come in handy for getting hair/soap clogs out of the shower and sink bathroom drains...
