All kidding aside, the transponder was inoperable and the plane was still capable of flight when the pilot ejected. Haven't found anything saying why they ejected other than there was a problem.
Of course with a stealth jet, unless there was an IR camera following it closely then it's very hard to know where it went after the pilot ejected. It's not like airport radar would be of any help....
And depending on what was wrong with the plane it could have flown a long way. Back in 1989 a Mig-23 flew over 500 miles after the pilot ejected. So not unheard of, but definitely unusual.
Of course if folks want to consider conspiracy theories, this was an F-35B variant with VSTOL capability, so it could land in a small parking lot if it was under control....

It did exactly what we designed it to do: make itself less visible.Dave58 wrote:How do you loose a fighter jet??

I have heard, we found it.
Also keep hearing the investigation will be "transparent."
I wish they wouldn't say that. The public has no need to know what went wrong (I trust the pilot's judgement), and I don't trust them to tell the truth, anyway.

I agree I don't expect them to tell the truth. I can tell you the paranoid folks at the local country store think the AI was hacked and the jet automatically ejected the pilot. I looked at the crash site pics on line and I didn't think the crash site was big enough. I told my wife it was probably in a warehouse next to the 30k pounds of fertilizer that disappeared from the railroad.
I don't expect we will never know the truth....
