DIY Survival Candles

Candles are an easy-to-use source of emergency lighting and a little bit of heat. I'm shocked to see some of the prices that are charged for long burning candles sold for survival or emergency preparedness - if you want to buy a dozen or so candles, the cost really starts to add up.
Never fear! You can make your own survival candles at home for cheap, using high-quality, long burning soy wax. It's an easy project - the materials are easy to buy and you won't need any specialized tools.

Dipping Candles the Old-Fashioned Way
http://www.askaprepper.com/dipping-candles-the-old-fashioned-way/
Candles were a common source of light in many colonial and pioneering era homes. While oil burning lamps burned cleaner and with less odor, oil was expensive and could be hard to get. Candles, on the other hand were made at home, usually setting aside one day per year, in the autumn, for making the year’s supply of about 400 candles.
Today, candles are mostly molded and made out of paraffin, which comes from petroleum or coal. However, paraffin didn’t become commercially available until the early 1800s. When it did, it revolutionized candle-making for its availability and low cost. ---CONtiNUED---

Re: Candles-Home Made 'Candles' & Lights
I bought candles at yard sales - usually half burned, and plenty of leftover wedding types, too. I tried to stick with unscented, but accidentally got a few scented ones, too.
Then I bought twine and some small washers. Found some regular mouth pint mason jars not doing anything. Bought a box of book matches.
I cut the twine the length of the mason jar with extra to tie to the washer. Sank the washer in the bottom of the jar, and then looped the twine around a pencil at the top, which I then laid across the jar top.
I melted down the wax in a double boiler, and poured it in the jars to one inch below the top. When it set, it usually collapsed a little in the middle, I poured a little more wax in to level it off.
I let it set overnight, unlooped the twine from the pencil and trimmed the wick (twine). Tossed in a book of matches, and then put a lid on it.
Now I have 4 cases of candles, with matches in each jar for emergencies.

DIY Chandlery: How to Make Your Own Candles
https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/diy-chandlery-how-to-make-your-own-candles/
(Snip) ... While there a few different types of candles you can make, we’re going to focus on container candles. Rather than free-standing wax, these are the candles that you find housed in jars or other containers (hence the name). These are the simplest to make, as they don’t requires molds or any other specialized tools. You simply find an old mug, or buy some cheap mason jars, and you’re set. ---CONTINUED---

Candles-Home Made 'Candles' & Lights
Some of the idea that are in separate threads are included in this article that has a number of ideas to make your own quick lights or candles, but it's got great photos for them!
Power’s Out and in a Pinch? How to Create 5 Makeshift Urban Survival Lights
https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/powers-out-and-in-a-pinch-how-to-create-5-makeshift-urban-survival-lights/
It’s impossible to be perfectly prepared for an imperfect world. Sometimes you just have to go MacGyver and solve common problems by using the resources you have on hand and a little ingenuity. I’ve always said that the ability to improvise is one of the most important survival skills.
This article is a collection (not all my own I’ll admit) of a few creative, makeshift lighting solutions you may have to deploy as a last resort if the grid goes down. You just never know when one of these innovative ideas might shed some light into your darkness. ---CONTINUED---

Re: Candles-Home Made 'Candles' & Lights
I always keep the 'ends' of candles or what's left in a jar candle. I scoop out the leftover wax from the jar candles and keep it all in a zip-bag w/ the candle ends. I sort by color, to make it easier later.
I buy the wicks at the craft store to keep on hand.
Now, I can melt the wax and make my own candles. Or you can use the melted wax for firestarters. But, my goal is to use for candles.

I do the same thing and I buy candles at yard sales for pennies on the dollar. Then I make them in mason jars, and put a book of matches inside on top of the candle, so you always have a light, too.

How To Make 30 Hours Survival Candles with Soy Wax
http://www.askaprepper.com/make-cheap-30-hours-survival-candles-soy-wax/
Soy wax burns cleaner and a lot longer than most paraffin waxes. This is what makes it the best option for survival candles.
But an emergency soy wax candle can cost up to $20.
I made mine’s with only $1.67 / candle: ---CONTINUED---

Re: Candles-Home Made 'Candles' & Lights
Make your own lantern with a soda can and a candle, can also be used as a heater too. There are other options on making them in this link. Depending on the size of the can and the size of the candle results in more or less light/heat.
I've made one out of a 1 gallon paint can, which you can use a larger candle and get more light/heat. Here's a youtube video:

How To Make A Candle That Lasts 100 Hours
https://urbansurvivalsite.com/how-to-make-candle-100-hours/
(SNIP) ... In this video, UK Here We Grow explains how to quickly make a candle that will last over 100 hours. Here’s what you need:
A typical tall white candle like one of these.
A glass jar that’s about an inch taller than the candle (so about 7.5″ in this case).
The glass jar’s screw-on lid (so you can cover the candle when not using it).
Some kind of vegetable fat (not lard).
Now here’s how to make it: ---CONTINUED---
