Home Made Olive Oil Lamps

Reading these instructions, it can be adapted to use mason jars with lids, I would think. Especially the Home Canning jars! That would be a more stable container/lamp

Glass Bottle Oil Lamp

Intro-Glass Bottle Oil Lamp

Make a small decorative oil lamp out of an empty glass bottle with screw-on metal lid. It's cheap, easy, and possibly romantic.

The lamp is filled with half water and half oil (or all oil if you like, but it's not as pretty!), and will burn for several hours depending on its size. The one I made will burn for a good twelve to fourteen hours, perhaps longer (I haven't exhausted it yet). All of the materials I used, I had lying around already.

There are endless variations that can be made. If you ever did the experiment in grade school with food-coloring-dyed liquids that float on each other due to different densities, you can turn this into a beautiful piece of artwork. Glycerine and rubbing alcohol work well. Cork will float between the water and oil.

step 1-Materials
You will need the following materials: 1 glass or heavy plastic bottle with metal screw-on lid 1 sharp poking implement (I used the pointy end of a metal compass, but anything sharp, like a rusty old nail*, would work just as well) 1 bottle of olive oil 1 piece of 100% cotton scrap (I used a clean old sock with a big hole in it) **It's important that it be all cotton. …

step 2-Prepare The Lid
Remove the metal screw-on cap and get to work poking a hole in the center of it with your sharp poking implement. Be careful doing this, as it's possible for the implement to break through suddenly, and you don't want a pierce your hand by accident. In fact, you probably don't want to pierce your hand at all. So go slowly - a twisting motion works well, or, if you ha…

step 3-Prepare The Wick
Next you will need to make your wick. Use the scissors to cut out a long, thin strip of the cotton scrap. Make it longer than you need - you can trim it down later.

step 4-Combine Lid And Wick
This is the hardest part - you need to get the wick through that little hole. It helps to push the wick through, slowly, with the compass needle or the end of a bent paper clip. Once you get a little through, use your fingernails to gently pull it the rest of the way. If the hole feels really tight, you may want to widen it with the scissors - if it's too tight, it w…

step 5-Fill 'er Up
Now that you have measured out the wick, fill the bottle with water (and/or any other layers you want under the oil, decorated with food coloring, if you like), taking care not to fill it too much. Screw the cap with wick back on to make sure that the wick isn't getting wet before proceeding. Next, fill the rest of the bottle up with oil. If you have a large bottle,…

step 6-Let Sit, Then Light
Now for the profoundly boring part: let it sit. I reccomend letting it sit for at least an hour, so that the entire wick is completely soaked with oil. If you don't wait long enough, and it's not completely soaked, the wick will burn off and the lamp will go out. The wick should last you a good long time, but if you ever need to, you can pull more through the cap or …

Typical, store bought holiday candles can be dull when compared to homemade candles. And one truly unique option is to fashion a candle from an orange! This fun holiday craft will add ambiance to your next get-together, brighten your home and use up any unwanted oranges. This project is easy, inexpensive and suitable for anyone comfortable with handling a knife for carving.

Oil Lamps . . . Empty Kerosene Lamps

Kerosene Lanterns and How to Use Them
https://preparednessadvice.com/lighting/kerosene-lanterns-and-how-to-use-them/

They take some getting used too.

Most of you probably have at least one kerosene lantern, if you don’t you should.  Kerosene lanterns were in common use prior to the advent of electricity.  They provide good light and are efficient and simple to use.  You can purchase hurricane lamps quite inexpensively for under $10 at stores like Walmart. Personally I prefer the ones I have found in garage sales.  Over the years, I have built up quite a few of them, never paying more than $5 a piece.

Most kerosene lanterns share a few things in common.  The majority of kerosene lanterns, other than the Aladdin, have  ---CONTINUED---

LOTS of information at this page, on EndTimesReport.com:

Lighting, by Miles Stair
http://www.endtimesreport.com/lighting.html

Just a few of the simple but elegant kerosene lanterns & lamps owned by Mr. & Mrs. Miles Stair. Decorative, yes -- but functional. From left to right: Dietz Little Wizard lantern; Round wick (9/64") decorative night light; Kosmos Concierge with #15 burner; Lamplighter Farms lamp with #2 burner; Czech Mirror Wall Lamp; and the Mason Jar Burner with #2 burner on an antique blue pint canning jar.

We now enjoy the benefits of electric lighting, powered by electricity delivered to our homes through the national power grid, giving no more thought to lighting than it takes to flip a switch or write a check to pay the monthly electric bill. Few realize the grid is very fragile: a few years ago a tree fell in the mountains, touched several high voltage lines, and the ripple effect took out the power to 9 western states. In January, 2000, someone sabotaged a single transmission tower in central Oregon by simply cutting a guy wire support, and when the tower fell parts of three states lost electricity. The power grid intertie works both ways! It can feed power from one part of the country to another, but if one segment goes down, it can pull the entire system down with it.

Imagine the scenario if a group of dedicated terrorists made a concerted effort to sabotage the grid - no electricity for a long time. But far worse is planned. Spetznaz troops were actually caught several years ago on top of Hoover Dam. Alexander Lunov has stated that Russian backpack nukes are already buried on American soil -- and targeted for Grand Coulee on the Columbia River and Hoover on the Colorado, among other infrastructure targets. Recent reports say that Osama bin Laden has purchased 20 of the Russian backpack nukes, some of them already on American soil. The Chinese military has published articles on how they would target America's infrastructure PRIOR to any conflict. By any measure, our electrical grid is a fragile, far flung target -- a tempting target for any terrorists, and one relatively easy to take out.

It is therefore entirely prudent to plan on living without electricity provided by the national power grid. But how are we to provide lighting for our homes? The vast majority of American homes would get really dark after the remains of pine scented Christmas candles were used up -- perhaps a few hours at best. The answer, of course, is to provide lighting for ourselves.   ---CONTINUED---

I have some vegetable / cooking oil that is too old to cook with. Thinking it may be good for lamps in an emergency? Or maybe barter for this purpose, for someone who does not have lighting? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XHmEb56vIk&t=33s
