So news briefing from DOD and they say they don't want to shoot it down for public safety. It's crossing states like MONTANA. FARM & RANCH territory. Just shoot it down over one of the MANY CHINESE farms they are buying up. Problem solved.

Neither article says what those read and black ink blots are supposed to represent. I am betting the black ones are the old Titan and Minuteman II missile fields (retired), and the red ones are the Minuteman III and Peacekeeper missile fields.

Apparently, no one in the government properly prepared for these balloons. According to The Administration, these things overfly us, from time to time.

If that is true, we should have invested in some technology to spot them and take them down, safely. (I am thinking, replace the head of an air launched missile with a bola and parachute. The bola entangles and adds significant weight to the balloon, and the parachute brings the missile body back to earth at a reasonable velocity. Perhaps guided descent.)

Well, the article claims "at least one balloon flew over parts of Texas and Florida during Trump administration, despite former president saying it never happened."

But they don't offer any evidence of that happening.

So, did anyone here about this?

My neighbor (who is 'awake' and follows this stuff) asked how I felt after our near end-of-the-world miss w/ the balloon. I'm like "What?" And she told me she heard there was a payload on the balloon. After I hung up, I did a little digging and found this:

Chinese spy balloon was 200 feet tall with payload over 2,000 lbs.: NORAD

It does appear that it had a self destruct device on board. You can hear them talking, at the very beginning, about hearing the explosion from the missile, then just before the 45 second mark, you can see debris breaking away from it, and a few seconds later, hear another explosion.

The self destruct device was fairly self evident.

I am skeptical about the 2000 lbs payload. My estimate was a lot less, but it is possible. (I really expect a lot less, and think Norad was exaggerating, but I am not a real engineer.)

If the payload really was 2000 lbs, then yes, it could have carried a nuclear weapon. As for EMP, the radius of effect, at that altitude would be around 300 miles.

Well Drink, our DOD has dropped the ball in so many ways, it's just a matter of time before China has a nuke onboard one of those balloons.

According to what General Jack Keane said on the news yesterday, this has been going on for over a decade, i.e. unexplained UFO's and the DOD just fluff's it off.

Even during the Trump administration, there were 3 balloons that flew near/over the U.S., but no one noticed until they went back and checked the records.

The U.S. is in trouble, deep trouble.

Just prepare yourselves for what may be coming, 'cause it will come, in one shape or form.

Here is what I know (all open source, nothing secret).

It appears that China has a surveillance program that uses balloons (our national intel network just briefed congress on this factoid, about 3 days ago). It also appears that China has been floating these balloons over the periphery of our country, for many years (again, briefed to congress, about 3 days ago). Kid you not, them there intel agencies are "johnny on the spot!"

The difference with the big one they shot down was two fold. One, it was massive. (I am still skeptical about the 2000 pound payload: most likely, that was the total weight of everything.) The other was that it deliberately steered itself right over, and then loitered right over, several strategic assets. Of course, the military would probably shut off any sensitive stuff, while it was there, but you can get amazingly detailed, 3D pictures of a lot of stuff, with a balloon like that.

So, for the next week, they "shot first and asked questions later."

And, yes, one of the balloons they shot down belonged to us. PopCorn

They are playing a game of semantics when they say it doesn't lose a threat. What he means but didn't say was "it doesn't pose an immediate threat to general and civilian aviation because of it's current altitude significantly higher and not at risk of a collision". "however we can't yet ascertain it's intention or motive but it's likely collecting sensitive data or seeking to find vulnerabilities to exploit almost certainly negatively impacting national security interests."

We need someone to post a high resolution photo. I am sure someone, somewhere, has a 6 inch telescope that will focus on something 8 or 9 miles away (to be clear, that might be too close, for some telescopes).

The one they shot down over the Atlantic had a substantial equipment pod, antennas, solar panels (maybe, hard to tell from below), and some form of propulsion.

TRex, if our government was interested in what's up there, they would already know what it is. The old Dragon Lady (U2) fly's around 70,000 feet and that was flying back in the late 50's.

The last balloon was seen by accident, by a civilian, other wise we never would have known.

I agree, we need some civilians to look for it and take pictures and post them on line, other wise, we'll never know, 'cause we have a corrupt government, run by a corrupt president.

I agree. I no longer really care what our government says they know or don't know.

I haven't trusted our government since 1994, and these days (after Covid19, the election fraud and J6) I don't trust them to tell me what the weather is.

That is why we need our own people to take a look at that balloon, with a backyard telescope.

Of course, all of this should be in past tense. It was expected to arrive in the SE US, on Friday. Shouldn't be over CONUS at all, by now. The Jet Stream is running over 200 mph, over the US.
