Summer Medical Stock Up
Summer is in the air, and along with the scraped knees that children tend to bring home, there are a number of other threats to our personal ecosystem.
This isn't just about antibiotics (I also need to restock a few other meds), but when I looked at antibiotics, I decided to start a thread on restocking my medical supplies.
In previous threads, we discussed antibiotics
https://emergencyhomeprep.forumotion.com/t407-antibiotics
especially fish antibiotics
https://emergencyhomeprep.forumotion.com/t990-fish-antibiotics
I think these would be a good thing to put on our annual review list.
Especially after I went looking for fish antibiotics and found one site listed in that second link has a sign on its website that says:
All Fish Antibiotics Out of Stock
That was the precipitating factor in opening this thread.

Re: Summer Medical Stock Up
In addition to the above, it appears I need to restock most of my cold medicines. I was sick most of the month of March, so I depleted my stockpile of cough syrup and cough drops.
My decongestant supply is pretty low, too. What I am not low on, I need to check for shelf life.
I consider most over the counter (OTC) cold meds to have about 5 year shelf life. A few of them (along with Antibiotics) I give 6 years.

Refuge Medical is largely a first aid training site.
For Pharmaceutical supplies,
https://refugemedical.com
sends you to
https://jasemedical.com
where they have a physician on site.

Re: Summer Medical Stock Up
There is another thread on here about OTC meds to stock up on.
https://emergencyhomeprep.forumotion.com/t454-stockpiling-medications-what-to-stock
Lots of good information, even though the thread is getting pretty old, and the first and third posts have dead links in them.
One item I disagree with, in the second post:
One item that I wish I had seen, years ago. Actually a series of items, there is a series of posts on using herbs and foods to fight high blood pressure in posts from Dec 12, 2018 to Jan 13, 2019.

One item I disagree with, in the second post:
I do this quite differently. I keep all of my pharmaceuticals in a cool dry and dark storage area, until the package is opened. Once opened, it goes to where it is easy to reach. The following medications should be stored separately from your regular stock. Meaning… you should buy extra specifically for storage, as you do for your long term food storage.

Yeah, the FDA is now requiring veterinary prescriptions for pet antibiotics
https://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/thelivestockproject/new-antibiotic-rules-what-do-they-mean/#:~:text=As%20many%20have%20heard%2C%20the,will%20require%20a%20veterinary%20prescription.
New Antibiotic Rules: What Do They Mean?
As many have heard, the USDA have released a new rule regarding antibiotics for animal use. This rule went into effect last month on June 11, 2023. For animal owners, this means that all antibiotics purchases will require a veterinary prescription. These antibiotics have to be purchased from a licensed pharmacy and they are no longer be available for purchase over the counter. To accept prescriptions, feed stores also have to be licensed.

In this episode of the Survival Medicine Podcast, Dr. Joe Alton and Nurse Practitioner Amy Alton lament the loss of fish and other equivalent antibiotics due to the actions of the FDA, leaving the family medic in survival settings with one less tool in the medical woodshed.

Maybe not: https://thefishantibiotics.com/collections/fish-antibiotics
"Fish antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections in fish, and they don't require any prescription."

The rule applies to antibiotics in pill form that are human equivalent.
The Calvet Supply page is just for injectable or spray antibiotics, neither are suitable for long term supply stocks.
