Re: Could You Eat A Mouse or Rat?
Gee ReadyMom you think of everything
Now, my wife made squirrel pot pie yesterday for supper, a cousin to the rat family. I would hate to have to turn to eating mice or rats, but you do what you have to do in bad times. You eat a rat or starve to death, your choice.
While in Vietnam, I ate many things that would turn one's stomach, but only ate them after a couple of beers too many, dog meat, monkey meat, snake meat, etc..
PETA would really like me.

I'll leave the mice for our cats, and stick to squirrel and rabbit if it comes down to that...

Re: Could You Eat A Mouse or Rat?
OK, this is neither a mouse or a rat, but I ate these when I was in Vietnam and they are tasty, they are called balut.
Could you eat one of these:

There are 80 head of cattle in the pasture next door and I have a loader tractor.

Balut! The egg with legs! So gross. Never ate one while we were in the Philippines, but knew very drunk people who did.
Not sure I could eat mice or rat...but aren't squirrels rodents?

if ya prick it and it bleeds, it's fair game. Dog is a fine meal and rat, in a heartbeat if need be. Ya'll just haven't been hungry enough. We, as Americans, in the land of a grocery store every few miles, are spoiled. Try going a week/10 days with nothing to eat and then tell me how disgusting that rat is. I have been that hungry and I have realized that it's all food.

Re: Could You Eat A Mouse or Rat?
Well, when the Donner Party got stuck at the pass in the California Sierra Mountains under 6 feet of snow - while most of the party ate each other, the Reeds ate the family dog, Cash. They were the only non-cannibals in the group.
I guess it's all relative...fortunately, I've never been that hungry and hope never to be.

Re: Could You Eat A Mouse or Rat?
Donner pass. It still strikes fear in people just talking about it. That scenario happens every winter tho. Being stuck in a car or truck is better than hunkering down under a wagon tho. I once got stuck underground (coalmining) because I was alone, in old works, examining. My light went out. The next shifts examiner found me. It was just a couple of hours but it seemed like days had gone by. Plus, I wasn't in any serious danger. Can you imagine the fear and panic that drove those people to kill and eat each other? The desperation?

Re: Could You Eat A Mouse or Rat?
Now that I think on it, learning about the Donner Party in school may have contributed to my deep-seated need to prepare for any event.
During the family reunion, we had a loose plan of what we would be doing/eating/relaxing, etc. Nothing was concrete, just a semi-plan, if you will. At one point, the plans went awry because of the weather...and I sort of had a Plan B, just in case.
One of my family members casually commented, "That's Cin, always has a backup plan."
And you know, I realized, I always have a plan, but it's always flexible. And I also realized, I've been that way since I was a kid.
Interesting to ponder.
