QUESTION on Gas Grills Empty QUESTION on Gas Grills

Post by rick1 Wed Sep 04, 2019 6:36 pm

Many homes have gas stoves/ovens (as we do) to cook on a daily basis. Every home that uses gas to cook in their homes uses up the oxygen in the home and it gives off carbon monoxide.

So, my question is, why can't you use a gas grill in your home? All gas grills come with a warning that states for outdoor use only, not for indoor cooking. Thinking

Appreciate all responses.

Because the size of the open flame is bigger than the open flames on the cooktop???

There is a reddit thread on that very topic:

https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/w81fm/why_is_a_gas_stove_safe_to_use_indoors_but_a_gas/

And the best answer there is:

GrandmaGos wrote:As has been pointed out, an indoor home appliance stove normally burns methane, but an outdoor gas grill burns propane.
But that doesn't signify.
The reason you don't use a propane gas grill indoors is because, while a home stove has been carefully engineered and has had its burners precisely calibrated to burn its methane as completely as possible, thus cutting down on the amount of deadly carbon monoxide that is released, the burner on a gas grill is basically just "Release fuel for ignition" and "Shut off fuel". Since the assumption is that you're going to be using the gas grill outdoors, where it doesn't matter how much CO it emits, it doesn't need to have its burner carefully engineered for maximum efficiency.

Uhhh, now it make sense, OK. My gas stove/oven is propane, it's not natural gas. But it now makes sense to me.

Thanks dmwalsh568.
