The source of this flare is an un-numbered sunspot now growing near the sun's northwestern limb. Yesterday it did not even exist, highlighting the unpredictability of solar activity. More flares may be in the offing, so stay tuned

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING: NOAA forecasters say there is an 85% chance of geomagnetic storms on Oct. 30th when a CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. It could be a strong storm, category G3, which means auroras could descend to mid-latitudes--places like Kansas, Nebraska, Oregon, Virginia. The CME's arrival time is uncertain; estimates range from midday on Oct. 30th to the early hours of Oct. 31st. Subscribers to our Space Weather Alert Service will receive a text message when the CME strikes.

SPP is issuing a Conservative Operations Advisory for the SPP Eastern Reliability Coordination (RC) footprint, which includes the entire SPP Balancing Authority, effective 2:30 p.m. CT Friday, May 10 until an anticipated end time of 6:00 a.m. Saturday, May 11.

In the region of the Western Interconnection where SPP serves as a RC, it has similarly issued a Conservative Operations Advisory to raise awareness among owners and operators of generation and transmission facilities.

Conservative Operations Advisories do not require the public to conserve energy but are issued to raise awareness of potential threats to reliability among entities responsible for operating transmission and generation facilities.
Conservative Operations is being declared due to forecast of severe to extreme geomagnetic activity (also known as solar storms) with G4 conditions observed and G5 threshold possible which may have impact to power and transmission systems.
To mitigate risks to reliability associated with these factors, transmission operators are using heightened awareness of their transmission components. Owners and operators of generation and transmission facilities are to follow their own operating procedures for managing a geomagnetic disturbance event.
