The title is misleading! It's really all about making a natural fire pit, by digging a hole!

(Snip) ... There are a lot of plans out there for backyard fire pits, but none of them appealed to me. They all look like those foo-fooey, sleek and modern suburban “fire features” you see on HGTV backyard renovation shows. I didn’t have the time, nor did I want to spend the money on something like that. Besides, it’s not my style. I wanted my backyard campfire to look like something you’d stumble upon in a state park — rugged, crude, and functional.   ---CONTINUED---

(Snip) ... When building a fire, always think about safety first. You don’t want to be that guy who starts a raging wildfire in a national park. If your camping site has a designated fire area, use it. If you’re camping in a more rugged area that lacks fire sites, you’ll need to make your own. Select a site   ---CONTINUED---

How To Make A Smokeless Campfire

Make your next camping trip or other outdoor adventure more enjoyable with this simple, yet incredibly effective tip. This easy to follow video shows two separate techniques that when combined can be used to make a virtually smokeless campfire... allowing for a more pleasurable time when lounging around the fire, doing some outdoor cooking, warming yourself on those chilly nights, or simply hanging out with friends singing campfire songs and eating S'mores. The following is a quick look at the 2 techniques covered: 1) Basic fire making skills and principles. Also known as the "fire triangle", the 3 vital elements that any good fire needs for maximum combustion and efficiency are Fuel, Heat, & Oxygen. Get this combo correct and you'll never want for lack of a hot and clean burning fire! **Particularly useful to know when learning survival skills, or in an emergency. 2) How to make an easy fire pit that not only helps control the direction of where any residual smoke flows, but also reflects the maximum amount of heat back toward you.

Camp Fires or Fire Pit Cooking ?u=http%3A%2F%2Fclipground.com%2Fimages%2Foldies-clipart-10   Found this little reminder in one of my archives from Plan for Pandemic, which is no longer up & running.  It's a good reminder about wet stones in & around a camp fire or fire pit:

Original post by (tigerlily) at PlanforPandemic

Another tidbit from the SAS book - seemed really obvious after I read it, but I figure if I thought to myself "oh yeah..." then someone else might be interested too...

Avoid placing wet or porous rocks/stones near fires, especially if they've been submerged in water. Avoid using slate/soft rocks - those that crack, flake or sound hollow. When heated, if they contain moisture, that moisture will expand and the stone could explode or create airborn fragments that could injure someone nearby the fire.

(Sunshine Replied)
And don't assume outside brick can be used - it'll explode... it holds moisture and while it appears dry, it's got moisture inside.

6 Easy Campfires Everyone Should Know How To Make
https://urbansurvivalsite.com/easy-campfires-everyone-should-know/

Camp Fires or Fire Pit Cooking Ngcb1 This week’s video comes from the Youtube channel, Canadian Prepper, which I can’t recommend enough. In this video, he goes over the six basic types of campfires and their uses.

He also talks about the basics of building a fire in winter. As a general rule, any fire built on the snow requires a foundation of pine boughs or leaves to insulate the fire from the snow. Otherwise, the fire will go out as the snow melts under the fire.

With that being said, let’s build some fires. ---CONTINUED---
