Considering Cycling as Your #1 Transport Option?
http://readynutrition.com/resources/con ... _01022010/
By Lauren Hawley
I often wonder if we'll see a day when cyclists will outnumber motorists.
My primary transportation is a bike. I don't have a car because the expense is not worth it. With the price of gasoline continually rising and state of oil making everything more expensive, maybe more people will make this same choice.
No one wants this scenario to occur, but it's worth speculation: what should you consider if you've gone carless? This is a short guide on what you need to know if you're looking to use a bicycle as an alternate or primary form of transportation for everyday riding. ---CONTINUED---
Includes:
Question 1: What kind of bike is best for me?
Question 2 : Is it possible to get around only with a bike?
Question 3: How can I take care of the bike?

Change Bicycle Tires Yourself
http://www.doityourself.com/stry/changingbicycletire
A. First of all, you need some tire levers. These are little plastic gizmos that help pry the tire off the rim. You may use a screwdriver, but you run the real risk of damaging your tire, tube, and rim. You should get able to get these tire levers at a bike shop. ---CONTINUED---

How to Change a Chain
http://www.bicyclinglife.com/HowTo/ChangeAChain.htm
There are a lot of people new to cycling who are not aware that a bike chain is considered a "consumable", that is expected to be replaced periodically.
They usually find this out when their bike no longer shifts smoothly, or they experience chain slip while pedaling. (If this occurs while standing, it can be very painful as you come crashing down on the top-tube of the bike).
Often, you can get away with ignoring your chain except for a little oil now and then, but you will come to regret this.
When chains wear, there is often no easily visible indication that they are doing so. They seem to look just the same as when new, just a little dirtier. But chains wear in an odd way: they "stretch".
Now chains don't actually stretch in the normal sense of that word. If you measured an old and a new chain, each link of the old worn chain will be the same length as a link on the new chain, yet the old chain will be longer. You could painstakingly count the number of links to make sure that there were the same number of these same sized links. Yet, the old chain would still be longer.
The secret: ---CONTINUED---

I'm REALLY liking these seats as an option!! I'm a fan of the 'old fashioned' retro bikes (like you ride at the beach). Those little seats are a pin in the you-know-where!

How to Clean and Grease a Bike Chain: An Illustrated Guide
https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/how-to-clean-and-grease-a-bike-chain/
When you ride, your bike chain is subject to an onslaught of mud, sand, rain, oil, and chemicals. Over time, that cocktail of gunk starts to affect your chain’s performance, causing linkages to stick and skip so you’re no longer getting the power you deserve with every leg-pumping pedal. With regular riding, you should remove, clean, and grease your bike chain every few months... ---CONTINUED---

Extremely cheap bike trailer made from an old bike
http://www.survivalistboards.com/showth ... p?t=179945
I've wanted a bike trailer for a while and could never justify the expense so i decided to build my own using found materials. Provided you have access to basic tools and own or know someone who ownes a welder then you can make this trailer practically for free. I've learned that i am a VERY rusty welder when it comes to arc welding and as such my welds are VERY shoddy. the biggest problem was attaching the base which i scored from the trash but since i was too lazy to weld it or drill holes for bolts i just stuck it on with tie wraps (will probably fix it up a bit later). The mount could do with a bit of adjustment since it's probably the weakest point and tends to unbolt my rear wheel so any feedback would be helpfull. i've taken it for a dry run for about 5km on varying ground but i will take it for a loaded run soon once i get the mount fixed up. Anyway here's the photos as well as a simple diagram to show how i did it ... ---CONTINUED---

Re: Biycles . . . .
I have a 18 speed mountain bike that I've had for about 20 years. Had to change the seat, just to skinny and uncomfortable. Here's a link on recommended bikes for us old timers:

Re: Biycles . . . .
This looks like a good idea! Probably would be nice to have, if you can't get to a store to replace inner-tubes that would go flat. (Especially if bikes are your only way to get around!)

The Incredible and Efficient Use of a Bicycle as a Bug Out Vehicle (Part 1)

(SNIP) ... A bicycle will enable you to cover long distances, moving a significant load, with far less energy expended compared to any other form of transportation.
To hike 30 miles a day while carrying a pack is quite strenuous. Covering 30 miles a day on a bicycle with panniers carrying your gear is much easier. ---CONTINUED----

Re: Biycles . . . .
I bought this bicycle engine for my bike, I hooked it up while I was done at camp. Works great, especially if you're a little older and don't feel like peddling all the time.
I actually bought this to get me home, if we would get hit with an EMP. I bought extra electrical items for the engine, very cheap and put them it a mylar bag.

Here’s Why a Bicycle Might be the Ultimate SHTF Transportation
https://www.theorganicprepper.com/bicycle-shtf-transportation/
Have you thought about how you’ll get around in the event that hopping in your car and driving someplace isn’t an option? Transportation and mobility are extremely important factors in preparedness.
(SNIP) ... So what is the ultimate SHTF vehicle? You can find all sorts of fancy bug-out vehicles out there, but if you’re on a budget this may not be an option. Perhaps it’s time to consider the humble bicycle. ---CONTINUED---
