To get started with the basic building blocks of food storage, these are the top 10 foods I recommend. If these aren’t a good fit for your family, for whatever reason, stock up on the alternatives that you’re currently using. Rice and Beans, A Survival Combination
http://modernsurvivalblog.com/survival-kitchen/rice-and-beans-a-survival-combination/
Rice is rich in starch, an excellent source of energy. Rice also has iron, vitamin B and protein. Beans are rich in protein, and contain a good amount of iron and other necessary minerals, and the consumption of the two in tandem provides all the essential amino acids. It is no wonder that this combination is a staple of many diets throughout the world.
Although you will likely add other additional ingredients with rice and beans, having just…
(2) 5-gallon pails of white rice
(4) 5-gallon pails of pinto beans
…will provide 140 days of ‘survival’ calories. That’s technically more than 4 months worth of food! ---CONTINUED---

33 Essential Foods to Stock Pile
http://www.askaprepper.com/33-essential-foods-to-stock-pile/
There are many schools of thought on what should be stock piled in the event of a disaster or prolonged period of social disruption or societal collapse. It is hard to say with complete authority what “The best” foods are. This will depend on a number of factors, such as storage space, number of people to be fed, availability of water for preparation, availability of a means to cook foods or heat water, and the list goes on. There are however some standards that can guide pretty much anyone in the right direction. Just be certain that whatever you store, it provides enough calories, a dietary proper balance, vitamins, minerals, and fats. Remember, a crisis has a way of creating situations that will increase your caloric requirements, and that will tax your immune system and electrolyte balance ---CONTINUED---

10 Long Shelf-Life Canned Foods Every Prepper Should Consider Stockpiling
http://www.askaprepper.com/10-long-shelf-life-canned-foods-every-prepper-consider-stockpiling/
Stockpiling food is a key part of being prepared. Even if you have the skills and space to grow your own, you can’t be sure that a disaster will leave your crops intact and edible. Sure, you can recover from that, but it’s always best to have enough to keep you going while you plant and tend the next crop.
A lot of attention goes to storing bulk carbohydrates like rice, grains and pasta, or home preservation methods like canning or dehydration. Don’t overlook good old shop-bought canned goods though. These can have an impressive shelf life, they’re cheap and a well-chosen stock of them can add variety and nutrients to your diet in the months or even years after the SHTF. ---CONTINUED---

Re: Highly Recommended or Top Foods for Stocking Up
Don't forget that lentils are a great pairing with rice as it will give you a complete protein and can count as survival food. I found a good source for bulk lentil purchases of various kinds so I've got more options than just the brown lentils that are the standard lentil bag at the supermarkets around here. Green and Red lentils have differing textures when cooked so can make meals more interesting.

I have about 1/2 dozen 3-liter soda bottles filled with lentils. Green, red & yellow. I go to a local ethnic grocer and get them in larger-than-average bags. Freeze. Put in bottles till I can't get another single lentil inside and cap. Nice thing about the soda bottles is they are clear (but I still afix a name label & the cooking & nutrition info from the original bag with clear packing tape. AND ... they are stackable on their sides! Fit GREAT between the studs of an unfinished wall .

Re: Highly Recommended or Top Foods for Stocking Up
With lentils the soda bottles are a good choice since lentils are good practically forever. Unfortunately in my household we don't use soda bottles anymore (the few sodas we drink are from cans), so I went the more traditional mylar bag route with my storage. I label the bags with a Sharpie marker with food name and date of packaging so I have a clue later how long ago the food was fresh. I have a few cookbooks so didn't bother with cooking instructions for the lentils. For other foods I have taped the instructions to the bag just like you do with your bottles. Great minds think alike.

Re: Highly Recommended or Top Foods for Stocking Up
Same here. So, I buy the larger 3-liter at a discount bargain grocery store for .97 cents. Sometimes I find them at the dollar store. Empty the soda right down the drain. I figure it's worth the dollar for the storage option! You can store 5-6#'s of beans, rice or lentils in a bottle!!dmwalsh568 wrote:With lentils the soda bottles are a good choice since lentils are good practically forever. Re: Highly Recommended or Top Foods for Stocking Up
Man I hate lentils with a passion, can't even stand to look at them, so I stock navy beans and split peas, love those navy beans.
All my navy beans and split peas are stored in quart jars, with O2 and then sealed.

https://thesurvivalmom.com/prepper-food-essentials-that-must-be-on-your-list/
Think fast: What food items always seem to be on the shortlist when you head to the grocery store? Chances are, foods with the shortest shelf life will be on that list, e.g. milk, bread, eggs, produce. Foods that will spoil or rot within a couple of weeks are also ones that we depend on for variety and a well-rounded diet, and your prepper food storage is incomplete without it. ---CONTINUED---
