For those of us downwind of nuclear power plants, after doing the first steps of topping off water supplies and possibly spending any free cash on hand, it's time to make sure you have a shelter for radiation.

I have some of the old civil defense meters, dosimeters and dosimeter chargers stored in a faraday cage so I will be able to tell when we need to get into shelter, but I strongly suspect within a week, and possibly as quickly as 3 days post event that at a minimum all the nuclear plant cooling ponds will start spewing radioactive particles as they dry out. Worst case would be full meltdown at the plants, but I'm hopeful that plant operators would be able to drop the control rods into the reactors to keep the worst from happening. If they can't then there isn't a lot I can do other than staying sheltered as long as possible and hope for the best.
