Here's a video about the cans of generic brand 'Spam' products not holding up like the actual brand 'Spam':

Re: Spam . . .
Was researching shelf life of Spam and it seems it's 2-5 years, with 5 years being the average mentioned. One site actually said 5 years AFTER the 'best buy' date. Here's some of my sources:

Re: Spam . . .
Everybody keeps saying 2 to 5 years, but I regularly eat stuff older than that.
Personally, I limit it to 7 years, if it has a pop-top, because the seam where it tears is so thin. The video above mentions the seam, which is what actually failed on the generic. It wasn't the product inside the can, but the machining of the metal that was bad.
(P.S.: one of these days we need to put together a thread on things like botulism and other things that can go wrong with stored food. And maybe some remedies.)

That one is pretty good. It didn't make it obvious enough, though, that it wasn't the breaking of the seals that caused the botulism, it was the improper canning. Every jar he canned, by the third day, had botulism growing in it, not just the ones that lost their seal.ReadyMom wrote:You mean like this one?TRex2 wrote:

Botulism/Food Poisoning
I hear, way too often, someone talk about a jar or can unsealing and they say it might contain botulism. Well, if it does, then so do all of the sealed jars or cans done in that same batch. And they have it within a week, after they were canned.

Then let's add more info to the Botulism thread and can also expand on this thread: Mistakes in Food StorageTRex2 wrote:That one is pretty good.
