Someone is initiating worldwide cyber attacks   , doesn't surprise me:

Just amazing how many countries are hacking each other, even our so called allies are hack each other and us.

I'm always surprised that people are surprised on how much cyber espionage goes on all the time, since this is just a new front in the age old spying game. Countries spy on each other. The only difference in the last few decades is that multinational corporations are getting in on the game and freelance hackers can be just as much of a threat depending on their skill level.

NSA had, that's right had, a cyber warfare tool called "EternalBlue", but now it has been stolen and is being used to cripple computer systems in U.S. cities. Seems to have been stolen by Russia:

Yeah, I jumped to that conclusion too since it impacted regional elections in parts of Argentina. So it  could easily be part of a campaign to reduce the legitimacy of the elections. Sigh.

Bad enough that most people's home computers are running Windows (including me, for now) but worse, that almost all businesses run Window's Exchange Servers (which requires an educated person to run), and that is where this attack occurred.

And it follows on the heels of a recent attack that was carried out by planting a trojan horse in the most widely used security software in our government.

The world of computer security is back to the days when www was referred to as the Wild Wild West.

This has potential to do some really bad things.

Between industrial espionage, ransomware, industrial sabotage, DDOS attacks, etc this can cause catastrophe in ways most people don't anticipate especially because we don't know what china's end objective is with this latest major hack.  

I even saw a rumor that this latest hack may have even penetrated the new york stock exchange. Who knows.

It's not going to end well. China is absolutely our enemy whether we like it or not and people need to realize they are coming for us and want to harm us. They want us out of their way so they can rise to chinese glory as the master race and culture of the world. No seriously that's their objective and they are not shy about their perceived superiority and pre-destined rise of supremecy.

China's and Russia's goals are actually deceptively simple.

Russia wants to damage us economically and politically, so that we don't pose a threat to their expansionist policies in Eastern Europe and into Syria (this plays into the hand of prophesy, BTW) Nor do they want us interfering with their plans to enslave Europe by becoming Europe's primary source of petroleum products and some grains.

China's goal is to steal our technology. They don't want to damage us too badly, since that would be like gagging the Goose that lays their golden eggs. If the goose don't eat, the goose don't lay eggs. But they have to keep us off balance enough that those in Washington D.C. can make the case that it is a bad idea to interfere with their expansion into Hong Kong, and surrounding islands, as well as buying up land in Australia and the U.S.

Keep those goals in mind, and a lot of what they do starts to make sense.

Agree 100% on russia.

On china I'm more skeptical than you are. I definitely think they want to either enslave or destroy us as they rise to the position of sole global superpower with america being a 2nd class country in one form or another to them.. Just my .02 cents.

They are absolutely up to no good.

They are "prepping the field"

You can never know exactly what they are going to do,
you can only know what they are capable of doing.

They are not, yet, ready to dispose of us, but they could take down our grid through a cyber attack, something we know, from the briefings that came out of Texas, would take weeks to restart.

In the past, I would have said that they would probably use a proxy (like the Russians, or Anonymous) but with the current Administration they might not need to do that, relying instead on the weak willed puppets running our country, to prevent us from retaliation.

Well, looks like a global cyber attack, hitting 1300 different locations, including the U.S.. It's just a matter of time when we'll be running on generators and solar. Get prepared (even more), the clock is running, tic-toc:

Current Cyber attacks are actually minor. While everyone wants to "blame Russia" the sums of money they ask for are too minor to really interst the Russian Government. It would be like kidnapping the banker's son and demanding $50 ransom. That wouldn't make sense.
There are really about three possibilities.
ONE: The Russian Government can't contol them. (Not likely)
TWO: These are actually probing attacks. (Maybe)
THREE: They are a distraction, to keep our attention off of what they are really doing.
Number three is my guess.

I don't know TRex, shutting down an east coast pipe line and major meat plant in the U.S. I wouldn't call that minor.

This latest hack, they're asking 75 million, let alone what they got for all the other cyber attacks and the ones we don't know about.

No, shutting down the east coast pipeline wasn't a small thing (see note). Nor the meat plant.

But the ransom they asked for wouldn't amount to 1% of the KGB budget. Nor would 75 Million.

No, I think these might be a distraction, from something even more important.

(Note: The pipeline attack was on administrative computers: the pipeline was never in any danger. We shut it down because we didn't know if it was in danger, or not.)

For a while, I read a web site that tracked cyber attacks, but there were so many of them I couldn't reasonably keep up.

As for head in the clouds, the opening episode of "Jericho" (2006) showed a woman walking down a sidewalk trying to do something on her cell phone, and saying "did something happen?" as a mushroom cloud rose over a nearby city.

These attacks, like many others, are simply probing and practicing. They are seeing what they can find, and what they can get away with.

The countermeasure is still the same.

Have at least two means of communication, with everyone that you can.

Have at least a month's income in cash, plus a month's worth of groceries, at home.

That way, if the hackers knock something down that can't be fixed for a while, we will all be ok.
