Florida has first two cases of coronavirus, governor says

Florida’s first two cases of coronavirus were announced Sunday, prompting Gov. Ron DeSantis to declare a public health emergency.

Two people tested presumptive positive for the coronavirus, the governor said Sunday about 9:30 p.m. The cases involve someone in Hillsborough County and someone in Manatee County, he said in the order.

The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta still need to confirm the results.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - A fourth Florida resident is said to have coronavirus but is currently self-quarantined in Washington state and has not stepped foot in Florida since testing positive, Governor Ron DeSantis said.

During a news conference in Orange County on Wednesday, Governor DeSantis confirmed that fourth Florida resident is confirmed to have coronavirus. However, this person was caught in Washington state with the virus and is still being self-quarantined there after a trip to Asia.

He said that although the person has not arrived in Florida since returning from Asia, the CDC still counts this for Florida since the person is from the state. The person will reportedly be allowed to return to Florida after testing negative for COVID-19...

An elderly Panhandle man, who recently traveled internationally, is the fifth Florida resident to test positive for the coronavirus, Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a press conference on Thursday.

The Santa Rosa County resident is over the age of 70 and has “severe underlying conditions,” DeSantis said.

The governor continued to emphasize that frail seniors are most at risk for the virus that has claimed more than a dozen victims in the U.S. and thousands worldwide.

“The risk to Florida remains low and the risk to the country remains low,” he said. “Just take proper precautions. We want to do what we can to contain the limited number of cases that we have.”...

The Florida Department of Health reported this evening that the coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19 case count has risen to 7773 total (7495 in residents).

The top five counties as far as cases include Dade (2416), Broward (1348), Palm Beach (616), Orange (458) and Hillsborough (362).
