WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump will send off a naval hospital ship Saturday before it heads to New York City, as he aims to highlight the federal response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The USNS Comfort, a 1,000-bed hospital ship, had been undergoing planned maintenance, but was rushed back into service to aid the city which is now the epicenter of the nation's outbreak. It is scheduled to arrive Monday at a Manhattan pier a week after its sister ship, the USNS Mercy arrived in Los Angeles to perform similar duty on the West Coast. ---CONTINUED---

President Donald Trump left Washington for the first time in nearly two weeks to visit a Navy hospital ship dispatched to New York City to add some much-needed hospital support amid the coronavirus outbreak.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump visited Norfolk, Va. on Saturday to see off the USNS Comfort, a Navy hospital ship that is headed to New York to provide extra space and support to medical workers in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak.

San Pedro, Calif. — The USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) arrived in Los Angeles on Friday after leaving San Diego as part of the national effort to combat the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic. The Mercy's mission in LA will be to house and treat non-COVID-19 patients so the shore-based hospitals can focus on treating coronavirus cases.

"The men and women of the USNS Mercy and the United States Navy are honored to be here in Los Angeles supporting FEMA, the state of California, the county and the city in their ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts,” said Rear Adm.
