Many people have read the book "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen and believe that would be the scenario after a sneak EMP attack. Actually, such an attack is quite possible. North Korea has enhanced-EMP nukes. Iran is developing nuclear weapons and could well have one or two now. And both the Norks and Iran have launched satellites, so they do have the missiles to deliver those nukes. Iran has also launched SCUD missiles from "rust bucket" freighters and has shown they could deliver an EMP attack from off-shore without even using an ICBM.

The attack itself as described in "One Second After" is therefore quite plausible

Though there have been numerous technological advancements in modern civilization, a reliance on electrical energy in the modern world leaves us more vulnerable than ever to the aftermath of an Electromagnetic Pulse event. The potential effects of an EMP event on the U.S. power grid would likely be devastating to a degree of incomprehension.

History

An EMP first occurred in 1945, following the detonation of atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Scientist noted that after the blasts the atmosphere was saturated with an excess of electrons for several months.

The true forces of EMP were later realized in 1962 as a byproduct of a 1.4 megaton nuclear missile detonation at an altitude of 248 miles over Johnson Island, in the Pacific Ocean. Though this military exercise, named Starfish Prime, took place in a remote part of the ocean, locations as far away as Hawaii, California and Australia experienced radio disruptions. At least six satellites were also disabled by the EMP.

The effects on certain electronic equipment over very large expanses, opened eyes to the potential dangers.

Just over 100 years earlier, in 1859, a natural phenomenon occurred which had similar effects. Now known as the Carrington Event, this severe solar storm effectively knocked out telegraph networks on four continents, which required replacement of the trans-Atlantic telegraph system.

Today’s EMP threat types
EMP threats come in many forms, including electromagnetic attacks, cyberattacks, direct physical attacks and solar geomagnetic disturbances (GMD).

Electromagnetic weapons can range from small suitcase sized radio frequency (RF) energy devices, up to nuclear weapons detonated at a high altitude creating an electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) over a selected target. ---CONTINUED---

Although an EMP is possible by one of our enemies, my own belief is that it will be an internet access of the grid computers like they did in the Ukraine. Our electrical grind is hacked on a daily basis anymore.  I try to cover all bases of prepping, but nobody can prep for everything. Here's an artical from newsweek about grid hacks.

HEMP attacks are becoming more likely not less. It just takes one satellite with a nuclear bomb in it to ruin our collective day. When North Korea lofted its first real satellite was when I started getting serious about faraday cage storage of important small electronics.

Funny thing about prepping for one disaster is that the same gear can be useful in multiple scenarios. Same flashlight and radio I stored in a faraday cage for a HEMP event work just as well in a grid down event caused by hackers, solar storm, weather damage to local grid, etc.
I like to think I'm prepared for most scenarios, but will freely admit that nobody can be prepared for everything.

I just like to read about new threats and think about how I would be impacted and see if I need to add anything new to my stock or if what I have is already enough. For example, to prepare for HEMP, I just added a few galvanized metal trash cans lined with cardboard then sealed them up with aluminized tape. Everything that went into the cans was already in my stores, including the aluminum foil and paper that the gear was wrapped in before going into the cans. Going slightly off topic, when Ebola became international news I just added a full face mask, chemical resistant apron and a pump sprayer to my gear. I already had Calcium Hypochlorite for making bleach, and lots of medical preps  (OTC meds, pet antibiotics, Tyvek suits, nitrile gloves, N95 disposable masks, half face respirators with LOTS of N95 or better filters, chemical safety goggles, etc.) for dealing with pandemic flu.

I like to think flexibility is the key to survival, and I try not to discount low probability events from my planning, especially when the impact would be devastating to our way of life.
