This article discusses what to consider in shoes, if you have to walk far:

If You have to Walk Out of the City

If you live in an apartment in the midst of a big city there is always a chance you may have to walk out in an emergency. This is not something that I hope ever happens; trust me, walking out of a sprawling metropolis does not appear anywhere on my wish list. However, as we continue to watch the events in Japan, we know that the possibility exists that even in the most developed cities, transportation systems can be disrupted at any time.

Besides having a “go bag” (See my previous post “Bug Out Basics” http://wp.me/p1dmhM-4d) now is the time to identify what footwear you will grab on your way out the door.

Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind:   ---CONTINUED---

How to Break in your Emergency Shoes
https://apartmentprepper.com/how-to-break-in-your-emergency-shoes/

In my post “What if You Have to Walk Out of the City” I mentioned you should break in your walking shoes well before any emergency happens. This may sound unimportant and boring, but believe it or not, your survival could depend on your ability to walk for a long period of time, and shoes that do not fit could delay or prevent you from getting to safety.

One problem that ill-fitting shoes could cause are blisters. Left untreated, blisters can be very painful and even get infected. Other problems that could occur are sore or bruised toes, sprained ankles etc. ---CONTINUED---

I keep an older, but still decent pair of sneakers (and a good pair of socks!) in my GHB in case I'm out and about in the summer in the wrong kind of shoes for walking home any decent distance. They aren't hiking boots, but for the paths I'd likely be taking home after an event, they are much better than dress shoes or docksiders....

Foot and Shoe Care Kit For SHTF
https://www.backdoorsurvival.com/foot-and-shoe-care-kit-for-shtf/

Shoes-General Considerations & Info Adult-baby-baby-feet-1021051-1500x600 Footcare is not something you can overlook for long during an SHTF situation without running into trouble. Taking care of your feet can be harder to do during a major emergency. I have always known about this because my father has always suffered from foot issues due to the conditions of jungle combat in Vietnam. As a child, I saw what he had to go through and was amazed that there seemed to be nothing that could totally cure the symptoms he had from “jungle rot”.   ---CONTINUED---

Survival Shoes: Lace Up or Slip On
https://survivalcache.com/survival-shoes-lace-up-or-slip-on/

Shoes-General Considerations & Info Best_survival_shoes_boots_shtf (SNIP) ... In this modern age we have people wearing hiking boots that don’t hike and athletic shoes when they never get off the couch. Even tennis players do not wear tennis shoes any more. Cowboy boots are in vogue worn by folks that wouldn’t know a cow from a cow pie. It’s all the nature of fashion these days. So long as it looks good, what else is there?

Well, how about the concepts of comfort, fit, and function? Those who work hard and play hard know well enough that footwear has to match the task at hand with fashion aside way down the list if on it at all. So, what kinds of shoes and boots should preppers be buying and wearing? ---CONTINUED---

Self Sufficiency Skill: Basic Shoe Care
https://apartmentprepper.com/self-sufficiency-skill-basic-shoe-care-2/

Shoes-General Considerations & Info 410WdxF25uL._SL500_AA300_2   One of my earliest memories was of my grandfather showing me how to shine our “church shoes.” He was very particular about his appearance, but was very frugal so he kept his shoes looking new for years. In my free spending days, I never bothered to shine my shoes as I got rid of them as soon as they showed signs of wear. I was not alone in this, as our throwaway society encourages us to replace things as soon as possible. When I realized the folly old ways, I started taking better care of my footwear and began to utilize the services of a cobbler. Alas, the lack of customers drove many of the shoe repair stores out of business. There are still a few around town, but they are a distance away. As times get tougher, it is worth our time to learn some basic shoe care. I also believe footwear is important enough to warrant some attention, in case you every have to walk out of the city in an emergency, so you might as well take care of them. ---CONTINUED---
