Japan sees 1st coronavirus case not linked to travel to China

KYODO NEWS - 24 minutes ago - 18:45
TOKYO - The government on Tuesday confirmed two more cases in Japan of the new coronavirus, including a tour bus driver who has never been to the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak of the deadly virus began in a seafood and poultry market.

The findings bring the total number of confirmed infections in Japan to six.

The bus driver in his 60s drove two groups of Chinese tourists from Wuhan earlier this month, Japanese health minister Katsunobu Kato said.

The driver from Nara Prefecture, western Japan, was diagnosed with pneumonia on Saturday and has been hospitalized in the prefecture.

The other case newly confirmed is of a man in his 40s from Wuhan who has been in Japan since Jan. 20. He too has developed pneumonia.

The ministry said it is checking the health condition of people who had contact with the two new patients.

WAKAYAMA, Japan - A man in his 70s who was treated at a hospital in western Japan where a doctor was recently confirmed to have been infected with a new coronavirus has also tested positive for it, local officials said Friday, adding that the two apparently never had any contact.

Wakayama Gov. Yoshinobu Nisaka said, however, he does not think infections are spreading inside the Saiseikai Arida Hospital in Yuasa, where the man, a farmer, was briefly hospitalized from last week.

A local government official warned that infections could be spreading outside of the medical facility as the man developed symptoms before he visited the hospital on Feb. 6.

So far, more than 250 people in Japan -- 218 of whom are passengers and crew from a cruise ship quarantined in Yokohama -- have been found to be infected with the pneumonia-causing virus...

JAPAN: Recap of Taxi Cab Drivers

HatTip2 Hat Tip to 'Gert van der Hoek', FluTrackers:

Coronavirus: 'Stealth outbreak' fears as Japan struggles to find links to new cases nationwide

febr 14, 2020

TOKYO - A surgeon and a patient at the same Wakayama hospital, near Osaka, have been infected with the coronavirus, officials said on Friday (Feb 14), with three other new cases surfacing in Tokyo and Okinawa.

These developments come a day after Japan reported its first coronavirus-related death - a woman in her 80s in Kanagawa prefecture, south of Tokyo.

Japan's 35th case is a female taxi driver in her 60s in Okinawa, who is suspected to have ferried passengers of the Diamond Princess cruise ship when they disembarked in the prefectural capital of Naha on Feb 1.

The country's 36th and 37th cases are both linked to an infected Tokyo taxi driver, who is the son-in-law of the elderly woman who died. The man, who is in his 70s, had attended a new year's gathering on board a 'yakatabune' boat cruise last month.

An employee of the yakatabune, as well as an employee of a taxi driver's union, were confirmed to have been infected on Friday.

Domestic media cited experts as wondering if a "stealth outbreak" might already be underway in Japan.

Tohoku University Professor Hitoshi Oshitani told Jiji Press that efforts should be devoted to reducing the speed of contagion and treating the severely ill, as an epidemic is "likely occurring to some extent".

None of the new cases have cited any recent overseas travel, let alone to Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak. This has left officials perplexed as to how an emerging bunch of cases around Tokyo and in Wakayama - which borders Osaka - have occurred.

(RM's note: This ship is a petri dish for this virus. Poor passengers have no other option but to get infected)

HatTip2 Hat Tip to Avian Flu Diary

Japan MON: 70 More COVID-19 Cases Found Aboard Diamond Princess
https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2020/02/japan-mon-70-more-covid-19-cases-found.html

With roughly 72 hours until their 14-day quarantine is scheduled to end, 70 additional passengers aboard the Princess Diamond have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Of those, 38 (54%) are reportedly asymptomatic.

To date, 355 COVID-19 case have been identified aboard ship, out of 1,219 people tested (1/3rd of the ship's passengers and crew). Of those, just over 30% were asymptomatic.

With 2/3rds of the ship's complement still untested, finding this high of a percentage of positive carriers (many of whom are asymptomatic) this late into the quarantine period is a concern. At this point it isn't clear what additional steps the Japanese government will consider should positive cases continue to turn up. ---CONTINUED---

Japanese Professor Warns of Need to Prevent a ‘Second Wuhan’
https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/japanese-professor-warns-of-need-to-prevent-a-second-wuhan-1.1392882

(Bloomberg) -- A Japanese expert in infectious diseases who created international headlines by criticizing the nation’s handling of the Diamond Princess quarantine on YouTube has warned of the need to prevent a “second Wuhan” in Japan.

Kentaro Iwata, a professor at Kobe University Hospital who said he boarded the cruise ship, posted videos to YouTube earlier this week in both English and Japanese in which he slammed bureaucrats’ handling of the quarantine. He later deleted them. Hundreds of people aboard the ship in the port city of Yokohama have been infected, with two reported dead. In an interview with Bloomberg News, Iwata said Japan now faces a critical period in its handling of the outbreak.

“The big agenda now in Japan is to prevent the second Wuhan,” he said. “Wuhan suffered from a huge number of patients. Once it gets to that level, nobody can stop it, it’s completely uncontrollable.” ---CONTINUED---

Hokkaido News reported that Hokkaido today added three confirmed cases, and a total of eight cases have been reported there. One of the three newly diagnosed cases was a Japanese brother who attended elementary school. His younger brother was under 10 years old. He had fever symptoms on the 15th. He was admitted to the hospital on the 19th. The elementary school child stopped going to school after the fever on the 15th. Over 10 years old, he had a fever on the 18th and was admitted to the hospital with his brother on the 19th.

The two brothers live in Nakafurano, Hokkaido, and attend the local Nakafurano Elementary School, which had 208 students in November last year. The Nakafurano-cho Board of Education has today instructed the elementary school to close and block the school, so that students can immediately return home for observation.

As for the way the two brothers are infected, they are still being investigated, and people who have had close contact with them will also be tested. Another newly diagnosed case was a 40-year-old woman living in Chitose. She worked at the Chitose Airport Quarantine Branch of the Otaru Quarantine Office. She had a fever on the 16th and went to the clinic on the 18th. She was diagnosed today. Neither the elementary school student's brother nor the female quarantine officer have any records of going abroad in the near future.

HatTip2 Hat Tip to Avian Flu Diary

Japan MOH: 35 New Domestic COVID-19 Cases

We are also seeing cases in many communities, suggesting that despite their containment efforts, the virus is getting a better established in the population. ---CONTINUED---
