The Hong Kong government will stop issuing individual travel permits for travelers from mainland China, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

Individual travel permits allow residents of 49 cities on the mainland to "visit Hong Kong in their individual capacity.”

The latest announcement comes as part of Hong Kong's efforts to curb the spread of the virus.

On Saturday, the China Association of Travel Services reported that all tours, including international ones, would be suspended starting Monday. China also stopped domestic group and packaged tours last Friday.

(Bloomberg) -- Thousands of Hong Kong medical professionals voted to begin a five-day strike Monday after the government refused their demand to shut all entry points from China amid a deadly virus outbreak on the mainland.

The Hospital Authority Employees Alliance said there were about 99% of “Yes” votes cast by its members on Saturday. More than 9,000 members have pledged to take part, first in suspending non-emergency services offered by the city’s Hospital Authority before extending it to providing only limited emergency needs, it said.   ---CONTINUED---

Officials announced on Thursday that three more people have tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total to 53.

Health officials said the first case was a 43-year-old man who lives in Tuen Mun and who is a relative of a 66-year-old man who was diagnosed with the illness on Tuesday. The two men had dinner with 11 other family members on January 30. ---CONTINUED---

lthough Hong Kong officials have only detected 50 cases of COVID-19 over the past 22 days, there are enough signs of community transmission that officials have ordered extraordinary steps to try to curb further spread of the virus (see Feb 10th HK Officials Urge Social Distancing - Next Two Weeks `Critical Time').

Hong Kong's schools, which have been closed since before the Lunar New New Year, were originally ordered shuttered first until Feb 17th, and then that date was extended to March 2nd. Overnight the decision has been made to suspend classes through March 16th.

As with the last two `resume dates', this decision will be reviewed and - if necessary, extended - in the weeks ahead. ---CONTINUED---

As at noon today (February 22), public hospitals had reported to the Department of Health the admission of 19 patients (13 male and six female, aged seven to 89) in the past 24 hours who met the reporting criteria of COVID-19. Appropriate tests have been arranged for the patients.

There are 98 patients under isolation currently. So far, 11 patients with COVID-19 infection have been discharged upon recovery.

The Hospital Authority will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.

HONG KONG: Hong Kong on Sunday (March 1) reported one confirmed case of Covid-19, which was related to a Buddhist worship hall that had been suspected of multiple infections.

The new confirmed case took the total number in Hong Kong to 96, with 36 discharged from the hospital upon recovery.

The case involved a 71-year-old woman who worked as a volunteer in early February at the worship hall in North Point, Hong Kong Island, Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Communicable Disease Branch of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP), said at a press conference...
