China says more than half of coronavirus patients cured

In China, 573 new infections have been recorded but health authorities insist they are getting on top of the outbreak.

They say more than 50 percent of patients have been cured of coronavirus infection.

China's lockdown in order to curtail the spread of the novel coronavirus has had one unexpected side-effect — a sustained drop in air pollution.

NASA stated on Saturday that it had seen "significant decreases" in noxious nitrogen dioxide over China through February. Nitrogen dioxide is emitted by burning fuel, cars, power plants, and construction machinery, and it can aggravate respiratory symptoms and asthma, among other negative effects. ---CONTINUED---

Authorities in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan have been forcing hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren to take Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal preparations in a bid to ward off the coronavirus, RFA has learned.

The Lincang No. 2 High School apologized on Monday after issuing a Feb. 29 letter to parents requiring all students, parents and teachers at the school to take a herbal brew based on a prescription issued by the Lincang TCM Hospital.

"All teachers, students and parents must report obtaining the prescription and taking the medicine in a timely manner to their child's class teacher," the directive orders. "This will need to be done prior to registration." ---CONTINUED---

A former coronavirus patient has died five days after he was declared recovered from the disease by a Chinese hospital, media reported.

The 36-year-old man, Li Liang, died on Monday during post-recovery quarantine in Wuhan, Hubei Province of central China.

He suffered a sudden death triggered by respiratory obstruction and failure, according to a death certificate provided by his wife, named by media as Ms Mei.

The cause of death was concluded as the novel coronavirus. ---CONTINUED----
