Amid growing fears of a full-blown epidemic, health authorities are trying to wrap their heads around why children have not been struck down by severe symptoms.
Australia's chief medical officer Dr Brendan Murphy said it was very 'unusual' when compared to influenza.
'We don't know whether children might be getting the disease but [their symptoms] are so mild they are not being picked up, or they're not becoming sick, or whether they are somehow less susceptible,' he said. ---CONTINUED---

COVID-19 has become endemic to the Chinese city of Shenzhen, and a sharp increase in pediatric infections may indicate that community and intra-family transmissions have become the new mode of spreading the virus, according to a study published yesterday in Emerging Infectious Diseases.
Also, in a research letter published yesterday in the Journal of Infection, researchers described and compared the wide range and changing characteristics of COVID-19 infection on computed tomographic (CT) imaging with clinical manifestations to improve diagnosis.

COVID-19 less severe in children than adults: study
https://www.aappublications.org/news/2020/03/16/coronavirus031620
Cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among children in China have been less severe than those in adults, according to a new study.
However, being in a young age group wasn’t entirely protective. Infants had higher rates of severe illness than older children. Experts also say more testing and research will be needed to understand children’s role in spreading the virus in their communities.
COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, was first identified in December 2019 in China and since has spread around the world. More than 174,000 people have been infected, including more than 3,800 in the U.S. The World Health Organization recently declared it a global pandemic, and the U.S. has declared a national emergency. ---CONTINUED---
