Scientists Predict Coronavirus May Live For Up To Nine Days On Surfaces

A new analysis looking at data from different types of coronavirus has shown that many strains can live on surfaces such as glass, plastic or metal, for up to nine days.
The work published yesterday in The Journal of Hospital Infection looked at 22 historical studies on different types of coronavirus, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronaviruses. The authors were originally intending to publish the analysis in an upcoming textbook, but in light of the recent outbreak, the they decided to release the work early. ---CONTINUED---

Re: Spread on Surfaces-CoVid 19
Thanks. This question just hit my radar this morning, since, like most of you, I do buy stuff from China from time to time. The stuff I will be ordering, if it comes from china, will be in the supply line for a lot longer than nine days, but I may give it a few extra days after it arrives, just in case.ReadyMom wrote: Hat Tip to John West's Daily Big Threat Blog:

Will Coronavirus Survive On Stainless Steel Pipe's Smooth Surfaces?
https://www.kaysuns.com/will-coronavirus-survive-on-stainless-steel-pipes-smooth-surfaces/
2019-nCoV is the seventh known coronavirus that can infect humans, and the remaining six are HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43, HCoV-NL63, HCoV-HKU1, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV.
According to the Guangzhou Daily, recently, during the surveillance of pneumonia of the new coronavirus in Guangzhou CDC, the nucleic acid of new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was found on the door handle of a confirmed patient's home.
To remind the public to pay more attention to hand hygiene.
One stone provoked thousands of waves, and "the virus was found on the doorknob" caused widespread discussion. Because of this, there seem to be many ways for the virus to indirectly spread, such as mobile phone screens, computer keyboards, faucets, and so on.
A week ago, the widely circulated statement that "cloth fur collars and woolen clothes are susceptible to viruses" has been confirmed as rumors. At that time, news broke the rumors that smooth surfaces might be more likely to retain viruses.
But what exactly is the truth?
A paper published in the American Journal of Infection Control by scientists from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, China and other countries in 2014 studied the survival period of H1N1 influenza virus on the surface of four common objects. ---CONTINUED---

Can COVID-19 spread via clothes, hair or skin?
https://news.cgtn.com/news/2020-02-24/Coronavirus-Can-it-spread-via-clothes-hair-or-skin--Ol6wNXdo76/index.html
"The chance of the virus infecting people via contaminated clothes is extremely low," said Feng Zhaolu, a researcher with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at a press briefing.
As long as an individual has not been to places with high infection risk, such as visiting a patient in a hospital or having been exposed to people with typical symptoms of the epidemic, there is no need to specifically disinfect the clothes, according to Feng. ---CONTINUED---

Re: Spread on Surfaces-CoVid 19
Can coronavirus be transmitted to material items, how long is it active and can you catch it from those material items. HHS is now trying to figure out how to test items shipped in from other countries.
If like SARS and MARS, it may be transmitted via material items and may stay active for as high as 9 days (maybe), but you are more likely to get it from person to person:

Banknotes may be spreading coronavirus, World Health Organisation warns
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/who-world-health-organisation-coronavirus-banknotes-warning-111019361.html
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has advised people to use contactless technology instead of cash as banknotes may be spreading coronavirus.
The infectious COVID-19 virus could be carried on the surface of banknotes for several days, the WHO warned on Monday night.
To stop the spread of the disease, people should use contactless payments where possible and wash their hands after handling cash, a WHO spokesman said.
The Bank of England also recognised that banknotes “can carry bacteria or viruses” and encouraged frequent hand washing. ---CONTINUED---

WHO: Coronavirus could rapidly spread through exchange of money
https://wsvn.com/news/local/who-coronavirus-could-rapidly-spread-through-exchange-of-money/
MIAMI SHORES, FLA. (WSVN) - Money in people’s wallets could help the coronavirus rapidly spread, according to the World Health Organization.
The WHO said on Thursday that the virus can cling to cash for days, and they are advising the public to use other forms of payment.
“This is a droplet-born disease,” Baptist Health Dr. John Braden said. “It’s by contact with objects that someone else has touched, and that is primarily the biggest way of transmission.” ---CONTINUED---

Coronavirus can remain in air for 3 hours, live on plastic for days, new study says

A new study suggests that the novel coronavirus COVID-19 can remain in the air for up to three hours, and live on surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel for up to three days.
The research, published in the medRxiv depository, also notes that the virus can remain on copper surfaces for four hours and carboard for up to 24 hours. The research found it could stay on stainless steel and plastic for anywhere between two and three days.
"Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for multiple hours and on surfaces up to days," the researchers wrote in the study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed. ---CONTINUED---

A Virologist Explains Why COVID-19 Coronavirus Isn’t Really Dangerously Lingering On Surfaces For Weeks

(BIG SNIP) ... Here’s the thing. RNA viruses, like the one that causes COVID-19, make a lot of mistakes when replicating their genomes, and sometimes these mistakes result in viral genomes containing fatal mistakes, or mutations, that render a critical viral gene non-functional – meaning they won’t infect people who come into contact with them. ---CONTINUED---
