Wood Burning Stove
We have oil hot water heat, but we have a wood burner in the house and one in the garage. The best wood burners you can get should burn wood and coal, if you live in an area that gets very cold in the winter and have access to coal. Wood is cheap heat and in an electrical outage you don't have to worry about keeping warm or cooking a meal. I've been burning wood/coal for almost 40 years and love it.
I haven't bought heating oil in over 5 years, cheaper for me to burn wood/coal. Before you buy a wood/coal burner, check your local codes and make sure you check with you insurance company. Most insurance companies will want to inspect the wood burner , check the type of flue and inspect the distances from your walls and floor.

Wood Burner
Having a wood burning stove in an emergency grid down situation is a must. One thing everybody must have is a flue first, or do you.
Although I DO NOT recommend venting a wood burner through a window, it can be done in an emergency and I have seen it done.
Here's a link on how to vent through a window:

Re: Wood Burning Stove
Circulating hot air from your wood burner helps keeping your area warm. If you have a circulating fan on your wood burner makes it easy, but what if your don't. Both of my wood burners have a circulating fan on them, plus I have an ecofan on top of the burner, this helps circulate the hot air in a different direction and there is no need for electricity.
I have the five blade fans, circulates more air, but they make different ones also:

Re: Wood Burning Stove
We heat with a wood stove. I can also cook on it. I'm glad we have it for the really cold days, it's nice to walk into a toasty house in the dead of winter.

2 days ago, it was 49 degrees at 6:00 a.m. and this Tuesday morning it's going to be in the 40's again. It's that time of the season to light the fire to take the chill off the house. It's also time to do you checking of your firewood, wood stove and chimney preps for the upcoming winter:

Well, it's that time of the year for firing up your wood burner/fireplace. We've had a fire going off and on for a couple of weeks now. Here are some simple instructions on wood burning safety:

Re: Wood Burning Stove
Thanks for the info, Rick. We got a new stove a couple years ago, Blaze King Princess, for those who want to know.
We burn seasoned wood only, and have a fan. We also have a chimney sweep come to clean out the flue each year in Spring. Husband used to do it, but the pitch of the roof is steep, and he's not getting any younger.
I have 2 cords stacked, and another 2 cords will be coming in the next few weeks. We only used 3 cords last year, but I want extra this year. Being better prepared is just common sense.
