Post by TRex2 Fri Apr 23, 2021 3:48 pm

G2 is a significant geomagnetic storm, but not enough for typical citizens to worry about. Transmission line controls may fluctuate and SW raido may be affected.

I suppose, if some system is hanging by a thread (Texas power grid, during the storm) a G2 event might push it over the edge, like what happened in 1989 Quebec or the 2003 blackout in the Northeast.

Solar flares are rated C, M, or X. C is the mildest. X class are rare.
CME (coronal mass ejection) is, basically, just another name for a flare.

Rinse Repeat.

The second story:
FIRST X-FLARE IN 4 YEARS: A new sunspot emerged during the early hours of July 3rd and promptly exploded, producing the first X-class solar flare since Sept. 2017. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash:
[picture of sun goes here]

A pulse of X-rays briefly ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout over the Atlantic Ocean: blackout map. Mariners, aviators, and amateur radio operators may have noticed unusual propagation effects below 30 MHz just after 1429 UT

The source of this flare is an un-numbered sunspot now growing near the sun's northwestern limb. Yesterday it did not even exist, highlighting the unpredictability of solar activity. More flares may be in the offing, so stay tuned

This is currently showing on Space Weather page:
https://spaceweather.com/
GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING: NOAA forecasters say there is an 85% chance of geomagnetic storms on Oct. 30th when a CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. It could be a strong storm, category G3, which means auroras could descend to mid-latitudes--places like Kansas, Nebraska, Oregon, Virginia. The CME's arrival time is uncertain; estimates range from midday on Oct. 30th to the early hours of Oct. 31st. Subscribers to our Space Weather Alert Service will receive a text message when the CME strikes.

Well it seems that we have survived another solar attack... I woke up this morning and the lights were on and sadly my wife and I didn't see any northern lights last night (kind of a bucket list thing)...

I really think that people have gotten used to getting by on less thanks to the lock down and our news and government is selling fear because it promotes sales and they have nothing left to sell.....

I will hop down off my soap box now and give somebody else a turn besides its my turn to watch for Zombies

A halo CME heading to earth over the next couple of days, right around the 4th/5th, may see some lights:

Yeah, this one is worth watching.
As the sunspot turns toward Earth, the chance of an Earth-directed flare is increasing. NOAA forecasters say there is a 20% chance of M-class flares today and a 5% chance of powerful X-flares--odds that could increase further as the weekend unfolds.

Solar CME expected to hit earth February 2nd, interesting read. Moderately/Strong G2 class geomagnetic storms are possible after the CME arrives:

G2 impacts Arora if you live in Canada or Maine.

Also impacts short wave radio.

The geomagnetic storm from last week has brought down some 40 starlink satellites.

X-Class solar flares are dangerous to everything in their path. The forecast is for a G2 storm, meaning the flare is just going to graze us, or pass close by.

This could be the harbinger of something bigger.

Geomagnetic Storm G4 level.
Dangerous.

We kinda got used to those solar flares, and quit watching, or at least watched a lot less. So, this one came close to shutting some (not all) stuff down.

I haven't looked at the space weather site, in a while (too many irons in the fire, and a fire that is growing cold), but, I still watch the Avian Flu Diary site:
https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2023/04/fema-preparing-nation-for-space-weather.html
Two days ago the earth was hit by a G4 solar storm due to a (relatively minor) earth-directed filament eruption on the sun. It sparked auroras as far south as the southern United States, but had only limited impacts on the electrical grid.

Just noticed an interesting (possible) coincidence.

From the "Climate Change, is it Real" thread, Dave58 posted a link to this:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/xgyje7/earths-core-has-stopped-and-may-be-reversing-direction-study-says

Earth’s inner core has recently stopped spinning, and may now be reversing the direction of its rotation, according to a surprising new study that probed the deepest reaches of our planet with seismic waves from earthquakes.

The mind-boggling results suggest that Earth’s center pauses and reverses direction on a periodic cycle lasting about 60 to 70 years, a discovery that might solve longstanding mysteries about climate and geological phenomena that occur on a similar timeframe, and that affect life on our planet.
I don't have precise timing on this (maybe no one does), but it appears the Original Carrington Event may have been three cycles ago, and there was another one in 1921 that would have been 2 cycles ago. I wonder if, when the core stops spinning (which is the current situation) we are more vulnerable to CME induced Geomagnetic Storms?

1921 Storm:

Another article on the G4 level Geomagnetic Storm that occurred, last week.
https://spaceweatherarchive.com/2023/04/26/severe-geomagnetic-storm-april-23-24-2023/

Those red spikes in the graph are where the intensity can become disrupting to the electrical grid, and flares of this magnitude can effect GPS, as well.

They are expecting M class flares.
Think of M as moderate.
Unlikely to disrupt anything here on earth.

Wish we could get warnings that only alert us to X class flares that have a chance of hitting earth. That would be something I would want to be aware of.

The latest is that it actually registered as G4, but, mostly concentrated around New Zealand.
