Hundreds of Arrivals from Wuhan Go Missing

Authorities have lost contact with hundreds of people who have arrived here from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "has failed to contact about 50 of the 1,085 Koreans on the arrivals list," a spokesman said Sunday. "We're continuing to send them text messages and have also asked local governments to get in touch with them."   ---CONTINUED---

There were a couple thousand cases of the virus in a city of a few million. Unfortunately, one of the big attractions to Wuhan for foreigners traveling there appears to be the "Wet Market."

Between those two statements, there is a fair chance, not a good chance, but a fair chance, that no one is spreading 2019-nCor in S.Korea. Only time will tell for certain.

SEOUL, Feb. 21 (Yonhap) -- The military is making all-out efforts to prevent the new coronavirus from spreading further into the barracks, officials said Friday, after the country's first infections in the armed forces were confirmed.

Earlier in the day, a Navy sailor on the southern island of Jeju was confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 in the first such case among service personnel here.

Following the confirmation, the Navy has checked the temperature of all personnel at the base where the infected sailor served and quarantined all those who had contacts with the person, it said.

"We have carried out disinfection work at the base and are devoting all our efforts to preventing the spread of the new virus," the Navy said in a release.

An officer each from the Army and the Air Force were also confirmed to have the virus the same day.

But the scariest development in the past 24 hours is that almost all patients at a psychiatric ward of a South Korean hospital tested positive for the coronavirus, with local reports saying members of the abovementioned Shincheonji Church of Jesus sect which has rapidly emerged as the single biggest cluster of new S. Korean cases, had attended a funeral in the same complex.

South Korea’s two confirmed deaths from the virus were also from the Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo hospital’s mental health division, Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Saturday. Both patients had been moved out of the psychiatric ward for medical treatment before their deaths, Vice Health and Welfare Minister Kim Kang-lip said at a briefing.

In other words, of the total 443 confirmed cases, more than half, or  231 were linked to Daegu, sect, while at least 111 - including four nurses - were from the psychiatric ward of the hospital in Cheongdo County. The two clusters account for almost 80% of the confirmed cases.    . . .

The 24-year-old was diagnosed Tuesday in southern Seoul, according to the Korea Joongang Daily newspaper.

SEOUL, South Korea — The wife of an American soldier who tested positive for the new coronavirus also has been infected, the military said Saturday as the total number of confirmed cases in South Korea neared 3,000.

The soldier was the first U.S. service member to contract the pneumonia-like illness, which has spread rapidly since first appearing in China late last year.

His wife has been in self-quarantine since Wednesday, when her husband tested positive, according to U.S. Forces Korea.

“She is currently being transported to a U.S. military hospital where she'll be in isolation under direct medical care and supervision from U.S. military medical providers,” USFK said in a press release...

SEOUL – South Korea recorded 586 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the nationwide total to 3,786, according to the Korea Center of Disease Control and Prevention.

The number was a surprise fall from the day prior – Saturday had seen 813 new cases – but still the second-highest number of new cases on record. The prior Sunday had also seen a slight drop, day-on-day, but Monday’s numbers subsequently rebounded.
