The novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has been transmitted inside an elevator, marking the first such case in South Korea.

A 41-year-old female working for the Seongdong District Office was confirmed to have been infected with COVID-19 after being in an elevator with a minister of Myeongseong Church, COVID-19 patient, at Prior Palace Apartment in Seoul at around 8 a.m. on Feb. 18, according to Gangdong District, Seoul on Friday. SEOUL, South Korea — The wife of an American soldier who tested positive for the new coronavirus also has been infected, the military said Saturday as the total number of confirmed cases in South Korea neared 3,000.

The soldier was the first U.S. service member to contract the pneumonia-like illness, which has spread rapidly since first appearing in China late last year.

His wife has been in self-quarantine since Wednesday, when her husband tested positive, according to U.S. Forces Korea.

“She is currently being transported to a U.S. military hospital where she'll be in isolation under direct medical care and supervision from U.S. military medical providers,” USFK said in a press release...

SEOUL – South Korea recorded 586 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the nationwide total to 3,786, according to the Korea Center of Disease Control and Prevention.

The number was a surprise fall from the day prior – Saturday had seen 813 new cases – but still the second-highest number of new cases on record. The prior Sunday had also seen a slight drop, day-on-day, but Monday’s numbers subsequently rebounded.

As of Sunday, the KCDC was testing over 33,000 suspected cases. So far, 20 deaths have been recorded from the virus. ---CONTINUED---

Churches were closed in South Korea on Sunday, with many holding online services instead, as authorities fought to rein in public gatherings as 586 new coronavirus infections took the tally to 3,736 cases.

That came a day after the biggest daily jump of 813 cases in South Korea's battle with the largest virus outbreak outside China, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said. The death toll rose to 20, up from 17 the day before.

Coronavirus fatality rate stands at 0.6% in S. Korea: KCDC

South Korean authorities said Tuesday that the probability of those infected with the novel coronavirus dying is 0.6 percent here, as the government battles community spread of the deadly virus in Daegu.

The confirmed case after the death in Gyeongbuk was added to record the 41st death of Corona19.

It is said to have suffered from dementia, and health authorities are investigating the exact cause of death.

S. Korea denies sending masks to N. Korea

SEOUL, March 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has denied local news reports that it has provided masks to North Korea to help prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

A local TV station carried the report with video footage showing a medical worker in North Korea wearing a dental mask with the logo of a South Korean brand. The report sparked speculation that the government may have delivered South Korean masks to the North.

"The government has not provided any masks to North Korea regarding the coronavirus situation, and no nongovernmental organization from South Korea has applied for the delivery of masks to assist the North," Yoh Sang-key, the unification ministry's spokesperson, said in a press briefing.

South Korea has declared a third city a "special care zone" to boost its capability to fight a spike in coronavirus infections, with cases nationwide soaring beyond 6,000.
