I know we have read that a vaccine might be available in 3 months. This report says it could take longer ... much longer.

HatTip2  Hat Tip to John West's Daily Big Threat Blot:

A vaccine for Wuhan coronavirus could take years to develop, based on our experience trying to fight Zika and Ebola
https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-to-make-vaccine-for-wuhan-china-coronavirus-timeline-2020-1

SNIPS:
. . . Several biotech companies have rolled out plans to develop vaccines to protect people against the Wuhan, China coronavirus, with support from global health groups and the US government.

. . . But vaccine development has historically been an arduous, multi-year process. None of the biotechs provided expected timelines to get their vaccines on the market.

. . . Previous infectious disease outbreaks, including for the Ebola and Zika viruses, show the challenges likely to face experimental vaccines for this virus as well.

. . . Anthony Fauci, the longtime director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, estimated the first clinical trials for a coronavirus vaccine could begin before this summer, in an interview with the industry publication Biocentury.

Of course, the 2019-novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), as it is now dubbed, has a solid lead in the race, and by the time a vaccine proves its worth in a clinical trial and manufacturers scale up production, it once again may be too late to make a significant dent in the course of the epidemic. But scientists hope they can make a difference.

I'm not sure we want a vaccine "rushed to market" Embarassed   I guess they could test in in China where things are already out of control but ...   So many questions.  Would it shed the virus?  Look at an Ebola vaccine insert and it says (page 7)
"Shedding
Shedding of vaccine virus into the urine or saliva was evaluated in 299 subjects enrolled in seven
clinical studies who were vaccinated with ERVEBO or lower dose formulations. Vaccine virus RNA wasdetected by RT-PCR in the urine or saliva of some subjects at timepoints ranging from Day 1 through Day 14 postvaccination. In the two studies that assessed shedding at Day 28, no samples tested positive.
Vaccine virus RNA was detected by RT-PCR in vesicular fluid samples from some subjects. In one subject, a sample collected 20 days after vaccination tested positive for vaccine virus RNA by RT-PCR.  Thinking     If the virus sheds can it give a false sense of security to use it in a population that does not have virus cases yet ... even cause some spread?

OK, looks like we have a 50/50 shot at an antiviral.
If we can wait until 27Apr.

Anyone want to guess how many cases there will be by then?

Remember: preppers are crazy, nothing like this could possibly happen.

Just for the record, testing negative isn't "cured"
it is "remission"
I find it disturbing that medical people would blur the distinction.

Ribavirin, penciclovir, nitazoxanide, nafamostat, chloroquine, remdesivir and favipiravir tested against 2019-nCoV in vitro
https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=https://www.huxiu.com/article/338151.html&prev=search

Chinese team finds drugs effectively inhibit new coronavirus in vitro [cell culture, not in animal]

...they evaluated five FDA-approved drugs, ribavirin, penciclovir, nitazoxanide, nafamostat and chloroquine, and two The efficacy of a well-known broad-spectrum antiviral drug, remdesivir (GS-5734) and favipiravir (T-705), against 2019-nCoV in vitro.

Nitazoxanide is an antiprotozoal drug that has the potential to combat a wide range of viruses, including human and animal coronaviruses, and inhibits 2019-nCoV at low micromolar concentrations (EC 50 = 2.12 μM) . It is recommended to further evaluate the effectiveness of the drug in vivo against 2019-nCoV infection. [Comment: repeated 500 mg BID administration yields 9 μM blood serum concentration, Kucers' Antibiotic reference. Nitazoxanide also has immunomodulary and anti-inflammatory properties and studies found 500 mg BID for 5 days had side effects similar to placebo.

It is worth noting that two compounds, remdesivir and chloroquine, can effectively block 2019-nCoV infection at micromolar concentrations, with EC 50 values of 0.77 μM and 1.13 μM, respectively; the selectivity index of the two is used to judge the drug effect (The larger the index, the larger the safety range) are (Figure 1a, b) .

Remdesivir has recently been recognized as a promising antiviral drug that can fight multiple RNA virus (including SARS / MERS-CoV) infections in cultured cells, mice and non-human primate models. The drug is currently undergoing clinical research to treat Ebola virus infection. Remdesivir is an adenosine analog that integrates into the nascent viral RNA strand, leading to the termination of pre-mature. This new study found that remdesivir works after the virus enters the cells (Figure 1c, d) , consistent with its well-known antiviral mechanism as a nucleotide analog. In addition, preliminary data show that remdesivir can also effectively inhibit human cell lines sensitive to 2019-nCoV.

Chloroquine is a widely used antimalarial and autoimmune disease drug and has recently been reported as a potential broad-spectrum antiviral drug. Chloroquine is known to prevent viral infections by increasing the endosome pH required for virus / cell fusion and interfering with the glycosylation of SARS-CoV cell receptors. This new study confirms that Chloroquine plays a role during the virus invasion phase and after virus invasion of Vero E6 cells infected with 2019-nCoV (Figure 1c , d) . In addition to its antiviral effect, Chloroquine also has an immunomodulatory effect, which can synergistically enhance its antiviral effect in vivo. Chloroquine is widely distributed throughout the body, including the lungs, after oral administration. The EC 90 value of 2019-nCoV in Chloroquine anti-Vero E6 cells is 6.90 μM, which is clinically achievable, which was confirmed in the plasma of patients with rheumatoid arthritis administered 500 mg. Chloroquine is a cheap and safe drug that has been used for more than 70 years, so it may be clinically applicable to 2019-nCoV. [Comment: chloroquine has narrow therapeutic range and less than benign side effect profile

In summary, the study shows that remdesivir and chloroquine are effective in controlling 2019-nCoV infection in vitro. Because these compounds have been used in patients with safety records and have proven effective against a variety of diseases, researchers have suggested that the two drugs should be evaluated in patients infected with the new coronavirus.

The only things they don't tell is the cost (a critical factor) and accuracy.

Other than that, this is great news. If the test is accurate before the person begins to spread the virus, that means quarantines will become effective tools, rather than the "screen door in driving rainstorm" level of effectiveness.

For several weeks there have been murmurs - first in Chinese social media - and more recently from more official sources, that the lab tests being used to detect the novel coronavirus in China - and elsewhere - aren't as sensitive as we'd hope.

Patients - even those with overt symptoms - sometimes test negative, even though they are actually infected.

This isn't a new problem, and we've seen it in the past with avian flu (H5N1 in particular), and with MERS-CoV. Nearly two weeks ago, on February 1st, I wrote: ---CONTINUED---

China approves flu drug being touted as a potential coronavirus treatment amid a rush of clinical studies
https://endpts.com/china-approves-flu-drug-being-touted-as-a-potential-coronavirus-treatment-amid-a-rush-of-clinical-studies/

One of the three drugs that China’s Ministry of Science and Technology has tapped as potential COVID-19 treatments to watch has notched its first Chinese OK — for the flu.

While there’s no proof yet that fapilavir, or favipiravir, is the cure that patients and physicians are yearning for, it stands out for a unique constellation of qualities. It’s been commercially available in Japan for several years (unlike Gilead’s experimental remdesivir) yet it’s new to China (unlike the malaria drug chloroquine phosphate). Perhaps more importantly, a domestic biotech — Zhejiang Hisun Pharma — owns the rights to manufacture and market the drug, preempting any concerns about patents. ---CONTINUED---

There are risks associated with any vaccine, and despite the dangers this virus presents, we don't want to make it worse by using a vaccine that might start it into mutations.

This has been a problem with using flu vaccines in swine and bird populations, the flu simply mutates to get around the vaccine.

Federal regulators are allowing hospitals and other laboratories to develop their own tests for the coronavirus in an effort to relieve what critics say is a shortage of testing for the virus.

The urgency for testing is growing as health officials report several new coronavirus cases in the United States and the country's first death — a man in his 50s from Washington state.

The new policy unveiled on Saturday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), follows criticism that a lack of testing has allowed the virus to spread undetected. ---CONTINUED---
