The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today that its testing has confirmed three more Wuhan-linked novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) cases, two in California and one in Arizona, raising the national total to five.

Last night, the Orange County Health Care Agency (OC HCA) announced a 2019-nCoV case in a person who had traveled to Wuhan, marking the third US case. In a statement, it said the traveler had been in contact with health officials while waiting for test results and received guidance on how to reduce exposure to the public while waiting for test results.

The person is now in hospital isolation in good condition. California health officials are tracing and monitoring the patient's contacts.

This afternoon, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LAC DPH) said a person returning from Wuhan sought care once they noticed they weren't feeling well, and testing confirmed a 2019-nCoV infection. The patient is currently hospitalized.

At a media telebriefing today, Nancy Messonnier, MD, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said the third newly confirmed patient is from Arizona's Maricopa County and also had recently traveled to Wuhan.

Maricopa County's health department said in a joint statement with the Arizona Department of Health Services today that the patient is a member of the Arizona State University community who does not live in university housing. The person is not severely ill and is in isolation.
The two earlier cases were from Washington state, confirmed on Jan 21, and in Chicago, confirmed 2 days ago.

More cases expected

"With our enhanced surveillance, we expect to find more cases," Messonnier said.
Testing is under way on more than 100 people from 26 states, and so far 5 have tested positive and 25 were negative. Messonnier said the CDC expects to receive more cases for testing in the coming days, which is a good sign that clinicians have a high level of suspicion.

She acknowledged that many people are worried about the disease but said risk depends on exposure, and there's no sign that 2019-nCoV is spreading in the community. The current risk is low, the threat is serious, and the CDC's response is aggressive, Messonnier added.
No evidence of asymptomatic spread

When asked about quotes today from a Chinese health official who said asymptomatic people appear to be spreading the virus, she said the CDC has seen the reports. "We at CDC don't have any clear evidence, but we are closely investigating that possibility."
The CDC is closely evaluating all contacts of US patients identified so far with a tiered approach, with an extra focus on those at higher risk, she said.

Health officials continue to collect and examine virus gene sequences from patients to look for the origin and any clues on what to expect from 2019-nCoV, Messonnier said. Also, she noted that CDC scientists have isolated and are growing the virus, and are working on a way to efficiently share it with the scientific community.

A second case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Santa Clara County, county health officials announced Sunday afternoon, in an adult woman who recently traveled to Wuhan, China.

The case is not related the the first confirmed local case, announced on Friday, which involved a local man who returned on Jan. 24 from Wuhan, the part of China where the disease originated, according to a news release from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department Sunday.

Two more Americans, a husband and wife, were confirmed to have the coronavirus late Sunday in the second person-to-person transmission in the U.S. and the 10th and 11th cases in the country, respectively.

The husband, from San Benito County, California, recently traveled to Wuhan, China, the center of the virus' outbreak, and apparently passed the disease to his wife, who did not go to China. Both 57, neither has been hospitalized, but they have also not left their home.

On Sunday, February 9, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials informed San Diego Public Health that all four patients being evaluated for 2019-nCoV at UC San Diego Health had tested negative for the virus. This information was shared with UC San Diego Health and at the CDC’s direction, the four patients were discharged and returned to federal quarantine at MCAS Miramar.

This morning, CDC officials advised San Diego Public Health that further testing revealed that one of the four patients tested positive for 2019-nCoV. The confirmed positive patient was returned to UC San Diego Health for observation and isolation until cleared by the CDC for release.

One additional patient from MCAS Miramar was transported to UC San Diego Health this afternoon for evaluation for 2019-nCoV. As per CDC instruction, patients being evaluated will remain admitted until the test results are confirmed by the CDC.

Both patients are doing well and have minimal symptoms.

The safety and welfare of our staff and patients remains our number one priority.

The patient in San Diego is a person who was evacuated from Wuhan, China, where nearly 60,000 people have been infected with what's now known as COVID-19.

A 14th person in the U.S. has been diagnosed with the new coronavirus, now known as COVID-19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the patient is one of the passengers who arrived on a State Department-chartered flight from Wuhan, China, to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego on Friday. All passengers on that flight have been under a federal 14-day quarantine since arriving in the U.S.

This is the second passenger from Wuhan to be diagnosed. The CDC said the two patients were on different flights and have had no contact.

"There is no indication of person-to-person spread of this virus at the quarantine facility," Dr. Chris Braden of the CDC said in a statement. The Sacramento County resident returned from China on Feb. 2

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento has its first confirmed case of coronavirus [COVID-19], according to Sacramento County Public Health officials.

A person from Sacramento County was visiting China last month, outside of the city of Wuhan, and landed at the San Francisco International Airport on February 2nd. That's when that person's spouse picked them up and drove them to their home in Sacamento County, where they decided to self-quarantine as a precaution.

The person began exhibiting mild symptoms during their quarantine period and after consulting with the individual's doctor, the Sacramento County Public Health coordinated testing with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] and the California Department of Public Health [CDPH]. A clinical specimen was collected from the individual and sent to CDC where laboratory testing confirmed the infection, according to Sacramento County Public Health.

Since the county next door already has the first (apparently) "in the wild" case, self quarantine is probably going to be the best course of action for future cases not needing to be put on a ventilator.

(CNN)As officials around the country urged local communities to think about ways to stop the novel coronavirus from spreading, California authorities said Wednesday that a person who died from Covid-19 had recently been on a cruise.

The patient, whose name wasn't released, was elderly and had underlying health conditions, and probably was exposed to the virus on a cruise from February 11 to 21 between San Francisco and Mexico, Placer County health officials said.

A person from Sonoma County who was on the cruise has contracted the virus.

The ship involved, the Grand Princess, is in the Pacific, and cruisegoers on this voyage and the previous one received a health advisory Wednesday. The ship is skipping its last port of call and returning to San Francisco. It is expected to arrive Thursday.

The person last worked screening air travelers for illness on Feb. 21, DHS said in a statement, which also said the medical professional had worn the proper protective gear while working. One day after a state of emergency was declared in Los Angeles County as six new cases of novel coronavirus were reported, four additional cases of the potentially deadly infection were confirmed.

L.A. Department of Public Health officials said Thursday the additional cases are part of a group of seven travelers who were on a ski trip in Val Gardena, Italy.
